Default FOR THE LS GUYS DOING A SWAP! 3-wire coolant sensor conversion part numbers

I am not trying to step on any toes, just provide information for parts I ran into difficulty trying to track down for the conversion process to go smoother for the next bunch who wants to try this swap.

If any of the vendors on here have this item in their inventory, can you please list up a link to it so we can locate these easier?

I have managed to locate the crossover part number for serveral stores to make the 2-wire stock ls plug a 3-wire for the conversion folks who want the temp sensor to work in their swap.

I, myself have a 1993 Chevy S-10 that came with a 4.3L.

But the information provided in a clip I watched was not entirely accurate until AFTER I watched a majority of the clip to get the GM part number.

Well after a bit of diligence, I managed to get the 3-wire crossover from several locations.

GM part number 12551708 crosses over for AC delco with the same number. But for NAPA its an Echlin part number ECH TS5721.

Oreilly's also carries that part under AC Delco.

I have not looked under advance auto parts. or any other stores. Majority of places have a napa. If you are still working on your project and can wait for Rock Auto or whoever to send this to you, feel free to give them a call.

These particular sensors, I assume because of the smaller thread and the crush ring included, are quite expensive. Napa lists it at $28.35 for my zip code, and Oreillys doesn't even show a price due to it being unavailable without ordering it.

I will check my Chevrolet dealer tomorrow and see if they have it. If they do I will post up a price.

Here are the links to pages I found online for finding the one best suited for you:

Don't all LS engines COME with a 3 wire temp sensor already? I have a 98, and it has a 3 wire, and the 05 LQ4 I have is a 3 wire sensor as well.........

no.

My 01 5.3 came with a 2 wire.
I should know, I snapped it off in the block, plus I am using original harness and it is 2 wires only.

I used the BWD one, I shoulda gave you those part numbers the other day, sorry. I just showed the video as a guide for how to hook them up, shoulda clarified. I struggled to find them last year too, finally found they made them for the 1998 Camaros at oreillys
http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...121&showTitle=

The connector http://shop.advanceautoparts.com/web...eIdSearch=6511

Most LS engines have a 2 wire, the 3rd wire is strictly for the guage.

Sensor-WT5121
Pigtail-PT217

Oreillys has them for 37.99 too, usually in stock around here.

To clarify the years they were used, its under the ECT section.

SO I e-bay'd PT-217 and it brings up a speaker wire pigtail:

I like the idea of getting rid of a sensor . Thanks for posting the above info. Going to have to check in with a shop and see what they have.

If you use the links in the first posting, you don't have to check with anyone... the sensor is right there when you click on the link.

He made and sent out a pigtail to me a few hours after sending payment.

Only the 98 Camaro came with a 3 wire as far as I know.
If you want to check compatibility with your gauge,
I measured the 98 camaro LS 3 wire sensor below:
temp/resistance
192/215
181/272
157/428
135/675
105/1225
You can probably get it close to your needs by adding a resistor in series or parallel.

Leave the dash out, comes up on ebay. I even posted a link for it at advance. Plus the junkyard has all kinds of them with 3 wires

I checked the link, but I'm in Canada and half those places are not here. I'm going to check with the Canadaian version of Napa and see what they have. I'll also see if Bill can make me up 2 of them.

Stormed norm: You can try heads-up on pacific.

They can cross the gm number or BW number to whatever they carry.

Probably cheaper there too.

There ya go, now add the application for what vehicles that sensor came in, specifically, what cars used that 3rd wire for a temp sensor, and we should have all the info needed to get that part

Fill me in, what's the significance of doing this 3-wire conversion?
Does this eliminate a sensor for the gauge?
Does this end up working with say an autometer coolant temp gauge?

The metric holes in the heads for temp sensors are rather small. A lot of older cars have much larger NPT senders that wont fit in the stock holes.
With the 3 wire sender, the same sender sends the signal to the ecu and to a separate resistance based gauge.
Unfortunately there is not a standard that all gauges go by in terms of resistance and temp. I posted the resistance at various temps above. You'll have to determine the gauges range needs. If different, you'll need to correct to get an accurate reading.
