Default 55 chevy rear diff fitment

Are any factory big 10 rears a good fit for a 55 chevy?55 rears are 60 inches wheel surface to wheel surface. The same width or a little narrower would be good.Ideal would be a big 10 posi,3.42ish with disc brakes that would clear the leaf springs in a width that would work.Is there such a rearend from a factory vehicle?Drum brakes will work if disc calipers wont clear the springs.I don't mind making or moving leaf spring mounts.

I'm trying to remember what hot rod or car craft magazine did years ago. I think it was a chevelle (1970) rear end they used and a spring relocation kit that straddled the frame rails so you can run a bigger tire. I'd have to dig out the old magazine , maybe somebody else could chime in if they have a better memory than mine.

Default Shoe box rear end

Plenty of options now. depends on your budget???? 67 chevelle 12 bolts same width. just gotta grind off existing mounts add some spring perches, Easiest is there are allot of companies that make ford 9in assemblies for tri fives. Check out www.tri-five.com

I have some 12 bolts but don't really feel the need for one on this.It will get a stock ls1 with headers and 4l60e.I was hoping an s10 big 10 or something would work out.Hope someone has figured out which one works out in tri fives.

70-81 Camaro/Firebird (61.5")
67-69 Camaro/Firebird
75-79 Nova and clones
68-74 Nova and clones as noted above
55-57 Chevy

S10 2WD is too narrow. S10 4x4 fits and is the right width but the perches are too narrow and need to be moved. Mid-80s G-body will fit but need perches welded on.

The stock rearend is 60" wide, so I suspect some Ford 9" rears can also be made to work if you prefer that sort of thing.

Some great info guys ,thanks a lot. That chart of all the rear widths is great.Looks like the 78-88 g body would be just right, two inches narrower than the 55 rear should be just right for some 8.5 inch old style americans.Just need to figure out if the disc brake calipers will clear the leaf springs and or frame.Anyone know the outside width on the 4x4 s10 rear, thats the only one not listed on that chart.
