Default 1989 SSP Notch Mustang 5.3 Swap- just the beginning

Hey everyone, I'm new to the site and am planning on doing a 5.3 swap into my 1989 Mustang. I tried getting rid of the rare cop car for a shell, but no one has been biting so it looks like another SSP will fall victim to the mod bug!

I'm currently in the planning stages of this build, but have a pretty extensive parts list put together and will begin purchasing parts very shortly.

The plan / parts list.

Driveline ect:
  • 2003 5.3L DBW - truck intake with 2.5 - 3.0" cowl
  • 4l60e trans with B&M shifter
  • Custom Driveshaft
  • F-body radiator / fans
  • 351w Headers w/Ls flanges or LS Swap headers

Suspension:
  • AJE K member kit includes
  • K member
  • motor mounts
  • coilover kit with 170 qa1 springs
  • CC plates
  • Control arms
  • crossmember
  • Lakewood Drag shocks and struts 90/10

Wiring / electrical:
Ill be going through the truck harness myself w/ correct injector plugs
Stock ecm being sent out to get VATS removed along with emissions
Florida 5.0 electric gauge cluster

Fuel:
  • Aeromotive 340 pump (or 255 walbro)
  • Corvette Fuel filter / regulator
  • -6 AN fittings / lines

Ill be using Borgeson Power steering lines to keep stock rack and gm pump along with the pressure reduction kit.

I am probably forgetting some stuff, but if you guys have any comments throw them at me! Ill update this thread once things get rolling and I start getting parts in. Keep in mind this is not necessarily a budget build, but this isn't going to be a super high dollar build either. I will check condition of the engine and trans when I get them and go from there. I'm more concerned with getting it all in the car and working correctly! Thanks for all the info and I'll post up some helpful things I have used so far

Sources:
Ls1Tech - for basically everything
LT1Swap.com - TONS of wiring info and help
Corral.net - Mostly hate motivation and some info

Thanks Guys!

No one wanted to trade this running beauty for a roller so I said screw it. I get the car out of storage April 5th. I'm picking up 5.3 DBW motor, 2wd 4l60e, wiring, tac, and gas pedal this weekend. 120k out of a running truck and I'm paying $1000. I figured it was a pretty good deal and had to jump on it. It sure beats the hell out of trying to find everything separate at a pick n pull.

Well, motor deal fell through, I guess there was a guy ahead of me to get it and he picked it up. I have first dibs on the next one which the guy should be getting tuesday. Crossing my fingers for a good one because the truck the previous swap was coming from looked pretty smashed up in front.

Default Updates (Ignore my dates for future reference)

Alright well, I picked up a motor with wiring / trans a week ago 4/12. Also, The SSP Is being Sold tomorrow 4/21 and I will be hopefully picking up a roller Saturday

The trans is from a 98, so I'm either going to swap it with our used trans parts guy for a different core or I'll just switch out the shaft, pump, and drum when we go for a rebuild. I will most likely just switch them out.

I started the wiring on Saturday 4/19 and ordered parts for the fuse block on friday 4/18. Here of some pics of the harness so far as well as the motor.

Motor when we first got it. (Yes a snapchat pic)

Harness removed from motor

More harness with the fox lurking

Motor Without Harness, needs some gaskets and a clean up.

The work area for the harness

Harness with Connectors clipped

Some wires taken out of Blue connector

Blue connector all Done, Red started. You can see removed wires / waiting to be removed wires in the bottom left.

The wiring looks crazier than it actually is. The majority of the mess is from the wires that are going to be removed.

Our builds are almost identical, I'll be following along to see how yours goes.

I'm a few steps in the process ahead of you, check it out if you need any insight I tried to take photos and document as much as I could.

Subscribed to yours, good luck.

Thanks! I'll be checking yours out. I am planning on picking up a roller this Saturday that already has front ajk k member w/ coil overs and tubular arms. I am definitely saving some cash this way. The only catch is the car needs to be wired with the ez wire harness which shouldn't be too horrible. I'll need to purchase the motor mounts and crossmember still but that's okay.
