Talking Another Porsche swap!! 911 996 w/ ls6 v8

Well, i feel i'm far enough into my project to start a build thread. Background on the car so no Porsche purists freak out! lol. This is a 99' 996 with the ever so sought after 3.4l m96 So already a good reason to swap the motor out. Second the reason for all the updated body work was the previous owner/owners (8 i believe!!) side swiped a guard rail and went over curbs with it....so i'm not worried about whipping my sawzall out and cutting up the body....since it wasnt perfect to begin with.

So here we are with the PERFECT candidate for a v8 swap!!

*** So this thread will show my journey into swapping an LSX motor into the P-car ***:jumper::bowdown:

I'd like to thank whit3out and 1dirtyZ for the inspiration and also Nick (whit3out) has helped me with my questions tremendously along the way. Great car guy that genuinely likes to help the car community!!

Onto the car:
-99' 996 c2 6speed
-09' GT3rs front clip (genuine bumper,fiberglass fenders,fiberglass hood,genuine head lights)
-996 RSR rear widebody and side skirts (took me awhile to figure out)
-19" HRE 542r's (came with some nasty no name 19's with 6 layers of different color paint on them)
-Bilstein PSS10 (came with custom cut springs!! lol)
-Plastidip Matte white exterior (Great 10 footer!!) At some point i may get all the body work 100% and get a proper paint job on it. Looks great at 10 feet away though!!
-Grey interior with some custom touches.....custom black suede airbag covers!lol, i'm assuming they blew out at some point. Black suede on the inner part of the grey seats.

Onto the pics:

Day i picked her up! If i wasnt soo excited to get into a 911 i would have done a proper inspection and probably wouldnt have gone through with the trade. I uncovered a plethora of hidden damage that was not shared with me. Cut springs, broken and welded subframe, broken under chassis braces, broken and jb welded power steering lines, broken ac lines, etc, etc. Anyway, whats done is done.

Cracked front end and ugly wheels in all their glory!!

Genuine gt3rs front bumper and HRE's added

Plastidip added

Farewell trusty M96

Stiffened up the trans mount while easy to get to

Hello broken subframe! Quality weld repair as well! Old vs. New replacement.

I must be hittin the gym good! One twist with my bare hands!! lol

Hello studly!! (reference to the arp head studs for the non wrench turners)

And wah lah!!

Spec stage......stage good enough for 750ft/tq!!!!

Motor and transaxle mated up via custom plate

BOOM we're in!!

Fabbing up mounts with cardboard

Cardboard into metal

Corvette fuel filter/regulator in stock 996 location

Corvette "batwing" oil pan to look more porschey....its also the shallowest pan with cool road race baffling technology

And thats where i'm at now folks!! Here is a list of things before she cranks up!
-Plug up my gutted Porsche engine harness to run the gauges
-Run power, ground, key on to my GM harness
-fab coolant lines
-install batwing oil pan
-fab temporary exhaust consisting of factory ls6 manifolds, pre cats, and cats.
-fill fluids
-Crank her up!! Fingers crossed since i didnt take this motor out of a running car.

I hate you but I'm going to subscribe to your thread anyways!

Your adaptor plate for the tranny does not look like the ones I usually see, did you make that yourself?

I like your engine plates and mounts.

Can't wait to see more!!!

It was fun with the flat6, but after looking into making that fast i had to go lsx! My other options were:
turbo the 3.4 = $15,000
supercharge the 3.4 = $10,000
Build the 3.4 and make it a 3.8 = $25,000
Used gt3 motor = $40,000! lol
actually i lol'd to all these options!! Way out of my pay grade!!

It really is pretty easy after you get the adapter plate.

I got an independent shop that usually does kit cars to make the plate for me, was about $3k less than a renegade kit. It's a 2 piece plate that uses a custom flywheel, porsche clutch,gm starter, and gm flexplate. So yes i have a flywheel and flexplate! lol.

this is def on my list of "HAVE TO BUILD" cars...

but the adapter plate or renegade kit costs have always steered me away from buying a roller to start on...

My adapter kit was $1850 out the door, consists of:
-plate
-gm started
-custom flywheel
-hardware

$500 for a stock clutch (good for 450hp) or $1000+ for an upgraded

I believe i got a great deal but it took months! There are other vendors out there to make the plates, just check out all the kit car websites. It wont be fully engineered with everything figured out, but that is what renegade is charging for.

KEP also makes the plates

I'd like to keep tabs on this thread, too.
Very cool!
The 997 front end is a real improvement.
Used parts like the subframe should be readily available with all of the build volume of the water pumper cars.

I built a '71 frankenporsche (911 RSR theme) with a wide body, turbo brakes, tuned suspension, LSD and 275 whp '95 993 engine. It weighed 2180 lbs. Lots of fun. This
should be a whole lot of fun!

Interesting that you have a flexplate and flywheel. I am nearly certain the Kennedy is a custom flywheel with the Porsche ring gear on the outside.

Could you please post the name of the machinist shop for future reference?

Doug

I'm pretty sure KEP makes the adaptor for Renegade Hybrids...

You can see the letters KEP machined on the top of the plate in WhiteOut's build threads:

Glad to see another 996 build. Welcome, and let me know if you need any help. I was thinking of using the batwing myself, but thought it might limit my exhaust choices.

Give us the details on the harness. I hear that is the most difficult thing to get right.

Yeah the 997 body upgrade is what sold me on it. But yeah all the big subframe items are fairly cheap for this car on ebay. KEP probably does have a ring gear on their flywheel. This is definately a one off to have both flywheel and flex! I'll have to look up the guys name again.

Yeah, you can get the adapter straight from KEP as well.

Actually the harness wasnt bad at all and really rewarding when it fires up knowing you did all that work!
Porsche harness i kept these:
-oil pressure
-engine temp
-starter
-alternator
May be able to use the oem relays for ignition, fuel pump,a/c,and fans
(i'll edit this as i'm not home to verify what all i kept)

LS harness is also bare bones
-MAP
-TPS
-IAT
-Crank
-Cam
-Knock
-engine temp
-vss
-tach out
-MIL
-Fans 1&2
-Ignition
-OBDII port
-a/c command
No MAF, o2's, or any emissions
Fan relay,Fuel pump relay (still working on if i need any others)
(I'll also edit this when i get back to the house to verify)

There is great info on many sites to help you step by step to make your own harness. I've never done any eletrical work and dove right into it.

The adapter and flywheel in the photo looks like the one I make. Check with me if you are interested in one as my price isn't that high.
