2015 L96 w/ LSX454 short block
Need some answers that my research and telcon's w/ the local GMPP dealer can't answer.
References to L96 refer to the Vortec 6.0 L96 as installed in my 2015 GMC LWB Pass Van. Rated 342hp, 373 ft/lbs. I can properly assemble a M/B/O sbc, bbc, & windsor from mostly memory, but have never even looked inside an LS motor, so please be patient.
Would like someone to confirm this info about this 2015 L96 so I can provide semi-intelligent information to camshaft & rotating assembly mfg's:
- cyl head GM part # 12629051 (68.4cc combustion chamber)
- vvt, yes
- afm, no
- 58x crank sensor
- 4X phaser part # 12625440
- Camshaft part # 12625439
Why?? Because I'm going to replace the L96 short block w/ a 9.240" iron short deck LSX454.
LSX454 Part #'s
Block - 19244057
Rotating Assembly – 19259254 consisting of:
- Crank - 19244018 (4.125"stroke)
-Rods - 19166964 6" long (scary rod ratio, 1.45:1; 20.11 deg max rod angle)
-Pistons – 19166958 4.185” bore
-What in the compression height? ________ . (1.177 gives 0 deck clearance)
-What is the dome volume? __________
I also understand that a different pan baffle will be required to clear the stroker crank, but can’t find a part # for it.
Anybody heard of any problems w/ that rod ratio? Like the rod trying to push the piston out the side of the block ??!!
I’m Smokey Yunick & Jere Stahl old school and that # scares me. But if it isn’t presenting a reliability issue, I can live with it. Shorter rods make bigger torque #’s and that’s what I’m looking for. This motor will never see 5800.
Do I assume correctly that all of the other L96 parts will work with this LSX454 block & rotating assembly? (Other than soft parts like gaskets & ECU reprogramming)
Thank you...

hey buddy I'm not sure what is going on. sound like your concerned about a crank clearance issue. it sounds like you need a new windage tray. find the part number for the 454lsx that gm sells as a crate engine.
also sound like you want to use the heads. is this correct?
Im really not sure whats going on but trying to get you to clarify so maybe someone else can help you.
What i would call someone who builds a lot of engine and buy the rest of you parts from them. they will get you all the right parts that your missing tell you what you can or can't use. in return for for their advice, you'll buy the parts for them. Im sure texas speed or mast motorsports or any other engine builder on the site will be more than willing to help.
scroll down the right side of the forum. any of those ls1tech sponsors can point you in the right direction.
good luck

Consider you are going from a stock bore of 4.00 to 4.185 bore, not a small jump. You may want to go with a different head in this case, seek a expert opinion such as AFR or Texas speed. At the least you'd want to modify the chamber on your stock heads, I'd imagine.
For windage tray, my stock LS1 F-body one was fit onto the 427 and trimmed to clear at points of interference, either this or you can buy one specifically made for a 454.
I'm guessing this may be a towing or heavy load hauling vehicle for something? I could see the build it yourself route adding up fast, a crate motor may be the best solution, just being honest. Look into a crate swap and selling the complete 6.0, possibly.
