Default 87 Fox Body Mustang

We are in the process of building a street/strip car. I got the roller from my cousin. He raced it several years ago, so it is already caged etc. Pretty good shape but needs a lot of work! We are wanting to go with an LS motor, however I'm not sure whether to go with the 5.3 or 6.0 liter. I also am wondering about transmissions. I believe all the 6.0 liters come with 4L80E's.
I don't want to have to cut the trans tunnel to make something fit. Does anyone have any experience with this and could share some knowledge?
TH350, TH400, 4l60E, 4L80E????

I have the 6.0 with the 4l80e. We had to cut a little section out for the trans to fit, but will obviously be covering it up. It was either that or beating it in. Cutting was much easier and cleaner.

Doesn't sound like it was that big of a deal then? Is the trans stock or have you had it built? Stall convertor?

It's not that big of a deal really. I'll try and get a photo posted for you to see what we did. Some people beat it in with a hammer, but we had the resources to cut and weld it back up.

The trans has a HD2 shift kit, and the converter is a 4000 stall single disk lockup. It also has a deep pan and trans cooler w/ fan.

The section we cut out was 17" long and 8" wide.

Don't use teamz LS k-member, if you do then a 4l60, 4l80 or t56 won't fit....and teamz knows that but won't tell you that...Use AJE LS k-member and there transmission crossmember and your motor and trans will sit at the right angle....use f-body ls1 oil pan..

Most of the guys i see built and use the 4l80 ends up taking it out and selling it and i'm really sure why yet....

If you do a few tricks to the 6.0 or 6.2 motor you can be faster on motor then a 4.8 or 5.3 turbo motor...

Steven32 i'm vary surprised you had to cut that much when using the AJE k-member...2 of my friends didn't have to cut anything.....i used a th400 and it fit great without cut anything....

The th400 is much smaller than the 4L80E. That and I have different fittings for the cooler.
Either way there needed more room on this side. Cutting it was much easier and cleaner vs taking a hammer to it.
But like I said, it was mainly cut due to the fittings and sensors.

That's the kind of stuff I'm looking for! I am also looking at a 2002 LS1, so it has the LS6 manifold etc, with a 4l60E trans and am considering a 6.0 with a 4l60E. I'm not sure if the LS1 combo is worth a few extra hundred dollars??
Also will a 4l60E work will with a 6.0 liter? I think I'm getting close to a decision point!

4l60e will work, but if you can get a 4l80e i would go with that one.

yes the 6.0 will work with 60e trans...but its not going to last long unless u put a million dollars in it......i would go with the 6.0 before the ls1...... Also i have gone through 5-6.. 4l60e trans and now I'm using a th400......All 4.8, 5.3 and ls1 motors need a power adder to have fun.....if you do a few tricks to the 6.0 or 6.2 you can go single digits on motor in the 1/4.......in a fox body..

I second.
The th400 and 4l80e are both very good options. Just depends on if you want o/d or not. and they can sure take a beating!!!

OK. I've got a 6.0 LQ9 on order and TH400 spotted. Mind if I ask
what type of rear end and gear ratios your running?

What kind of tricks for the 6.0 are you guys referring to?
I just bought a 6.0 drivetrain for my '93 coupe. I was planning on a turbo but if I can go single digits N/A then that'll be more than enough for me.

If you're going to be doing more street than strip, you may want to consider the 4l80e due to the overdrive.
Are you running turbo or na? I'm running turbo and I'm have a 3.27 in mine.
