Default 2010 silverado 5.3 to 6.2 swap.

New to the forums so I may be have some noobs mistakes here but here we go. I have a 2010 silverado with a 5.3 and thinking of swapping to a 6.2 for the power especially for towing. I've read around on different forums and it doesn't sound complicated. I just wanted to hear what you guys all feel about it. I hear you can use the same ecm and harness. They are essentially the same I would think. Would love to hear your input. Please keep it constructive.

This swap should be very easy accomplished. Truck is already mainly setup for the swap.

How much you plan on towing and how long if a trip is go be made when towing ?

The little 5.3 holds it ground quite well.

Maybe just turbo it instead? Truck engine bays are huge... You can keep a/c still with ease.

Not looking to turbo. That's the last thing I want. I've towed 1k+ trips with like 7k on a trailer behind me up Hills. Would just be nice to have a bit more power. I just want to know if there are any snags. From what it seems an ecm flash would be the biggest thing.

If you get a 6.2L truck engine, Just remove and reinstall. Have the ECM reflashed, I would suggest upgrading the valve springs to good aftermarket pieces at a minimum. While alot of 6.2s go 100K or more safely, they are known to drop the heavy intake valves.

I have access to cheap used 6.2 long blocks so I'd probably be rebuilding the whole thing.

Replace the heavy valves with LS3 hollow valves if you go the 6.2 route.

As with anything else in life there is always a catch. They all have mystery issues so I'll have to go through the entire engine with a fine tooth comb. I'm fine with that since I want to have a good rebuild to put in my daily driver. Once the new engine is built I want to try and do the swap in a weekend since it's my DD. Just trying to uncover any issues that may surprise me.

Does anyone know who does EMC flashing? Is that a dealer thing or some local shop who tunes?

Where do you live?
Tuning should be done in person but, there are a few reputable companies to that do mail order tunes.

I'm going to be doing the same, well kinda. I'm swapping out my 5.3 for 6.0.

Are you going with just a stock rebuild or are you going to be upgrading some parts?

We can flash the ecm for the 6.2, we tune a lot of 6.0 and 6.2 swaps in trucks in person and through mail order.

Since it will be my daily driver/tow vehicle I'll probably keep it as stock as possible for reliability. Maybe some upgrades like double valve springs, double timing gear stuff like that. Not 100% on everything yet. Just in the planning/research stages now.

Ok that's great I'll keep you guys in mind. What's the cost and turn around on a flash? Also is that just a basic plug in like it's stock and go?

For a mail order tune it runs $200 plus $20 return shipping with a 2-3 business day turnaround currently. Always check our website for current pricing and turnaround times. Once you received the ecm back just plug it in and go.

Dmost, I know this is an old thread, but just wanted to see if you ended up doing this?

I'm getting ready to do the same thing in my 2009 gmc sierra cc 1500. my truck is 1 year older than yours, so I don't have the VVT 5.3.

I'm doing the L9H 6.2 w/o the DOD and dropping in the LS9 cam with the vvt "delete kit" and LS6 springs.

hope yours went well, hopefully you'll get this. I'm anxious to hear how everything turned out and if you ran into any snags or have any useful advice for me.

thanks!
Mike
