Guys

I have a 67 camaro with lq4 and 4l80. I bought a GForce crossmember.

fits well. but i need about a 2.5 - 3" spacer under the trans poly mount to get the engine to sit at around -3degrees. thats with the poly mount.

its almost like this is the wrong crossmember for the car, but they assure me its not.

Im running SBC frame stands and edelbrock plates. back of the head is very close to the firewall, so i cant go at much more of an angle or the head will hit the firewall. oil pan is just a little higher than the subframe crossmember

Any of you guys run into this? where you have to make some huge spacer?

cant seem to figure out how this is possible.

engine is about 3.5 degrees down. not like its 15 degrees up

no, i dont think i do.

the "drain hole" is on the bottom, the "exhaust humps" are in the correct orientation.

it just seems like this crossmember might work for BBC, SBC 4l80 combinations, but not ls1 type stuff.

The owner assured me it would work. Hes not sure why this is happening either.

even with frame stand and plate variations, i cant see it being this far off

and then, the follow up question: what to do about it? a spacer just seems BS. but i guess it would work

id like to cut down to what i need and welded, but i dont trust myself with that thick of metal and then the finish will look like crap

Does the crossmember extend below the bottom of the subframe? Do the sides of the crossmember tuck up into the formed pockets in the floor? If not, then your ground/exhaust routing clearance will not be optimized.

My Gforce trans crossmember (4l60) hangs a little low too. nowhere as bad though. 5/8 inch shim. I do think the cross tube is excessively large for my use and I will make my own coping this one with a less robust cross tube and the correct height.

What motor are you running jimbo?

i guess ill end up chopping it and shortening the height.

sucks to shell out the cash only to modify it.

Hooker has a real nice 4L80 crossmember for 1st-gens that optimizes the ground and exhaust system clearance and provides the engine inclination angle you are looking for, but I don't think it would be compatible with your engine mount set-up. You would have to use the 12618HKR Hooker engine brackets with it to get it to install in your car properly.

yes, Todd, youre correct. i was pm'ing you about that crossmember for a year... waited a very long time for that crossmember only to find out that i had to change everything to use it.

already had my turbo pipes fabbed up.

just easier to rework the crossmember.

had that crossmember had a chance of working standalone (without swapping everything else out), i would have probably tried it. but not worth the cash/time to change everything out at this stage in the build

I understand...if I were dealing with your situation I would band saw the center beam out of the crossmember and re-weld it into a higher position just under the trans mount where it sits now and then shim the trans mount from that position to get the U-joint operating angles were they need to be. Because you are using frame stands and swap plates, you may have to cut into the floor to enable you to get the rear of the trans high enough.
