Default What Trany to run with ly6

Hi, I want to do a ly6 swap to my 1998 crew cab 3/4 ton 4x4 with 5.7 l got a used 09 ly6 with factory harness for free. I bought a crane cam 199/199for $100. I want to make the stand alone harness my self. The question is do I use the 4l80 that is in the truck and have to buy a controller for it. Or should I pick up a 6l90? The harness I have is for a 6l90, I think this would be easier swap wiring wise. I will be using the truck as a daily driver and for towing my holiday trailer. Thanks.

The biggest issue with the 6l80/90 is they are huge. Since space is less of a concern in a truck I would go withheld 6 speed all day long.

I would second the 6l80/90. You shouldn't have any trouble fitting it in. At most, you may have to open up the tunnel a little bit near the back.

Just make sure you get a transmission that is the same year, so you don't have trouble with the TCM not wanting to talk to the ECU. There was a change in those years (I think around 2008).

I have the 6l90 in my Dakota. It fit in that with only a small amount of pushing the tunnel, and has been a great transmission.

The extra low 1st gear will aid getting the heavy truck going too.

Basically any Chevrolet V8 transmission will technically fit. The bellhousing bolt pattern has almost never changed.

GM put the 4L80 behind the LY6 so it will work.

Default Ly6

The only reason I'm wanting a 4l60 is the size is smaller so I won't need to cut my tunnel up. Thanks for the reply
