Default Pulling a 5.3 advice...

Whats up guys, new to LS hp and this forum.

I am a Jeep guy looking to swap an lsx into my 2 door 96 Cherokee XJ.

I have swapped a few Jeep 4.0's but never an sbc.

Tomorrow I am going to the jy to pull a 5.3 LM7 out of a 01 Silverado.

Just wondering if you can give any advice to a sbc newb on this pull. I will be by myself. I will be cutting the exhaust after the O2's. I will not be saving the harness but I will grab the pcm. I also will not be getting the trans since it is an 4l60 and 4wd. I have a 2wd Cherokee.

Any advice you can give me would be fantastic, thank you!

What is the point of keeping the PCM if you're just going to scrap the harness?

Drop the TC,pull the engine and trans as one with the harness and everything attached.Take the harness and everything you can, even the transmission,
you will thank us later...

He doesn't need a 4x4 trans for a 2wd Cherokee.

But I agree pulling the engine and trans together. I've done this a dozen times and it is FAR easier to pull them together. It typically takes me 2 hours to pull entire engine/trans/transfer case. The last time I dropped the trans out by itself too 5 hours.

Something to do with a 4x4, remove the intake manifold when pulling. Otherwise you'll have a hell of a time getting the oil pan to clear the front differential.

I ended up pulling the engine by itself.

Had to cut some wires on the harness but I got the ecm. This can be programmed to work with 2wd instead of 4wd, correct?

Took me around six hours on my own and have never turned a wrench on any lsx so I think I did alright.

I did miss that middle bolt on the driver side of the bell housing. I got lucky and it snapped the bolt out of the bell housing instead of the block.

I was not going to pull the transmission because it was a 4l60e and every where I look people say they are weak so I will be looking for a 4l80 instead.

Looking forward to my foray into the LS world.

You will probably be seeing me around here a lot now.

take the trans. at junkyard prices it's worth it to sell off as a core. same with the harness. those two things alone can pay for the motor.

like joe said pull the intake so you dont bust that up. i take off the coils too.

using the picker at the junkyard is always fun. it's usually a home made gantry with a rusty chainfall. bring some PB blaster and lube the sucker up really good. I like to use a 10ft nylon tow strap rather than chains.

good luck. junk yard engine pulling is always fun.

Or take a sharp knife and cut the seat belts out of a donor car. They work great for pulling engines out with damaging them. You can tie them into a knot without worrying about messing up an expensive tow strap

What is this picker you speak off???

They charge us here to use their crappy picker. Sometimes it's broken, or doesn't fit in or around the vehicles and Sometimes we just have to improvise...

I would like to personally thank all the Morons who worked on this vehicle the day before I got there. They stole the injectors by cutting up the engine harness, damaging the intake and fuel rails to steal said injectors, Removed the transmission and the exhaust pipes, took the computer and the front lamp wiring harness, although you weren't smart enough to pull the 2 pins and instead cut the wires.

Thank You for leaving the best part behind and making it so easy for me to remove!!!

The yard I got this from is a brand new LKQ, open two weeks. I had been there three times and the engine kept calling my name so on Thursday I told myself, I am going to be there when they open on Saturday, bring my tools and if that engine is still there I am going top pull it. It was there and I pulled it. Like I said the yard is brand new so the hoist is brand new too.

I think it was harder to push the hoist up to the gate than pull the engine, lol. Every time it would swing forward it would slow me down then when it would swing back it would speed up.

Only real issue I had was I didn't realize there is an odd bolt from bell housing to engine on driver side and I missed it. When I pulled the engine it snapped the bell housing and not the engine, lucky there!

Cool thing is I found the registration, 171,000 miles in January. Truck was totaled so running when it wrecked.
