You can use the shifter, cable and bracket on the trans off of a fourth gen car and it will fit and function perfectly. If you are racing or other wise getting rough, though in my persoanl experience I would suggest a B&M ratchet shifter. I put one in my01 with the stock center console and love it. It would suck to throw that beast into reverse at the track with the stock shifter. But a stock shifter will get you mobile till finds are available.

well it depends on where you set your shifter in place at is what i learned! for me, i had my shifter mounted and then i got a peice of string and tied it off from end to end and i measured and it was 29 inches long which is the same length as a third gen with a 700r4 which is what i bought for my car and which is what worked out great!

I Helped One Of My Friends Do This Swap. He Used The Stock Auto Shifter In The Car And Used The Stock Cable. He Took The Shifter Out And Ground Some New Notches Into The The Plate And Made It Work. On The Cable He Used The Bracket Off The The Powerglide Trans And I Think It Just Bolted On The 4l60e.or He Just Had To Make A New Hole Or Something. I Forget, But I Know That Is What He Used. Also Ricks First Gen. Sells New Decals For Your Plate On The Shifter That Says 1 2 3 D N R P . They Are Like 12 Dollars.
