Default Shelby Cobra Replica????

Just wondering if anyone has done this. I got the itch to get a new car(sometime next year). I want to build a replica but I'm not sure about the motor. 427 would be worth more but an LS1 is lighter and would make a better daily driver. Anyone ever done this? Or can steer me in the right direction? Thanks!

Cripes, my brother and I have posted about this way too many times

an old thread

another old thread

latest pics

It has more than enough power for my dad, as the car weighs like 2300-2300lbs, with an LS1 that has a high flowing exhaust, intake, and a custom cal with an LS6 MAF. Runs very cool, as opposed to those big blocks that have cooling issues - more than one guy told us to make sure we really worked on the cooling system. On the 4th, before it rained, he was stuck in stop n go traffic when it was HOT. The car only got to 180 degrees. It should get incredible mileage, with a 6 speed and highway gears. I don't think any carb'd V8 guy can say that, especially the big block guys

Thanks for the info! Sorry for not keeping up with previous posts. I rarely browse the boards nowadays! I'll make it a point to check more often. Thanks again.

Do some research on clubcobra.com and such. See how people like their kits, the ins & outs of each kit, and how they match up to your wants/needs and budget.

My dad chose B & B for many reasons. Things to take into consideration are:

Are you building it for race or hot rod, long term durability?
How much will you drive it?
Will you drag race/ road race it?
Are you at all concerned with the accuracy of the kit? (I'm assuming not, since you are considering an LS1 as a motor )
Everett Morrison kit is a very heavy car, other race based kits are much lighter. Are you worried about the car disintegrating if you crash it? or do you want a tank?
Do you want a race suspension, or a mock Mustang setup?
The B&B body is very rigid; I've heard of others worrying a lot about their body cracking during handling/mounting.
Some are tubular frames, the B&B is square tube frame. How complete a kit do you want? Full interior/suspension/accessories?

My dad was able to skimp out on a lot of options on the B&B kit, to help save on his budget. I think he has ~$20k into it right now.

From what I've heard, Superformance is really nice. Factory Five Racing's kit seems to be geared towards using Mustang parts to have an easy to build race-based kit (aluminum floor pans and flimsier body as opposed to steel pans, and stiffer & heavier body).

I'm not too well versed on all the kits, but definitely find some locals who have some, and you can check 'em out, and get their personal opinions. Make sure you talk to someone who BUILT their own, as opposed to buying one that is done

Greatly appreciated! I want to learn a lot about the car before i start this. Hopefully by the end of the year i'll have a good gameplan together and start the project. My first agenda is going to be which kit to go with. What are the options out there? I heard of E.R.A. and now B&B. I would assume it would be best to go with the kit builder that most enthusiasts respect so the car can easily be sold in the future. What's your take on this?

I'll check out your site and links this weekend! I should be following your example since I'll be going with an Ls1 also. Thanks again. I'll have more questions by this weekend.

My dad guesstimates he's at $20-22k in parts.

It's pretty fast already. I saw him hit the throttle at about 60mph with him & a passenger, almost broke the tires loose.

He's already planning for cam & gears over winter. Tires - definitely. We were told the gears were 3.2X or something, but recently he was told that they could be anything, as the rearend is pulled from a junkyard and done up pretty much as is. They seem tall as hell.

Exhaust - not getting noticeably louder yet, but my dad hasn't put a ton of miles on it either.

B&B offers a 9" and the 8.8" for their kits. We got the 8.8" since this was done on a budget, and the 8.8" is plenty strong for radials we'll be running IMO. Just need to get a good set of gears in it.

If he sold it, he'd have to get a decent buck at this time. He restored a 64 Vette a year ago, sold it almost as soon as he was done, and he vowed he'd not sell this one as soon, unless the money was right. So $40k+ would be the asking price at this point I'm guessing. Hmmm... He did just get a welder of his own, and he will need a new project to use it on (other than my jeep)

Derf and I finished installing a Hotcam in the cobra this week.

Next week, him and his buddy are doing 3.73 gears.

Now it'll sound as bad as it looks, and be even quicker.

Maybe we can get a video up on www.chitownsyty.com with the new idle. Very different with the dual exhaust.
