Swap into Porsche 930?
What thoughts do you all have on the Porsche 930 swap? I love the look of those old Porsches, especially black and sitting low on good-looking wheels, with those huge whale-tail spoilers. I've been looking at Renegade Hybrids mostly.
The weights of the two cars seem to be similiar (it's this or a 3rd Gen RX7)... I'm a little leery of the handling problems I've heard of those cars having, being mid-engined and RWD. I'd rather LS1-power in a coupe with AWD, but oh well - it's a RX7 or 930, and the uniqueness of the 930 is more appealing to me. Seems like it might have a wider track as well and would have more potential as a track car (especially with V8 power), but it has a huge rear-weight bias that I'm concerned about. I've seen a few of the 1992+ 993s going for cheap as well with really high miles.

I took a ride in a 930 once and it was pretty amazing.... the car stuck to windy roads like glue and once the turbo was in it's powerband you couldn't shift out of 1st or 2nd gear fast enough! Agreed, great looking car too... I think if I were to buy a 930, I'd build the stock powerplant rather than put a V8 in it.
The RX7 route would probably be cheaper, and they're pretty sweet looking as well. There are also a few RX7 LS1's on this board should you have any questions or need any help.

They are actually rear engine, as in the engine is behind the transaxle at the back of the car. Also, 993s are 95-98, and they don't really seem to be very cheap. The 92-94 are 964 body style.
Also there is the whole thing with incorporating a radiator into a car that doesn't have the provisions for one from the factory.
That said, I have to say that would be a great conversion. The 930s were originally turbo cars with very stout 4 speed transaxles. I think a Carrera 4 would be right up your alley, it is just finding a cheap car to start with that would be tough.

Man, if it's a 'real' 930 turbo, those cars are already becoming highly collectible. A 930 in average condition fetches anywhere from 20-30k and low mile versions can get quite a bit more than that! I wouldn't do that to a real 930. Find yourself a regular 911 and do the wide body conversion if you're just after the 'look' of a 930. IMHO it would be a real shame to do something like that to a 930.
Another thing to consider with the Porsches, is that if you plan any drag racing, prepare to put big dollars into upgrading the transaxles. After about 400rwhp they get a bit dicey with any traction. Porsche parts are $$$$.

Thanks for the advice, Derek. I get a little confused getting all the model numbers right, with the correct years.. Seems like Porsche has a few different 9xx models for every year, haha.
I'll post up some of the cheaper ones I've found, sycotic. I do think it'll be a cool swap, although I've been given more opinions to just build up the normal engine. I really, really do not want to have to deal with "Porsche maintenance" when I start modifying the engine. Easier to get around 400HP with a LSx, rather than the factory Porsche engine, and still keep it dependable. (I think.)

Thanks, Mike. Definitely do not want to harm an actual collectible Porsche, so the 911 with appropriate body mods is the way I'm leaning. There'll be enough aftermarket/conversion/hybrid pieces on the car anyway that it'll be worth nothing as a Porsche.
Porsche parts are definitely money, I'm hoping that having a LSx engine will keep the engine end of things at least reliable and (relatively) cheap to fix and repair. As long as I don't get raped too hard getting the trans/rear diff up to snuff so I won't be grenading parts with power, the rest should be fine. I'll be replacing suspension components anyway, and might have to pay a little more, but as long as the performance and dependability is there...

The advantage of converting a 930 is of course the transaxle. It can take up to 700HP. Down side is that 930 is somewhat rare indeed. The Porsche purists would have your head! The problem with any high mileage Porsche, is the cost to rebuild, and frankly not worth the money to invest in many cases.

Seems like I remember seeing pictures of a 911 series Porsche where they'd turned the axle around so that the US V8 was in the back seat, a real mid-engined car then. With something as light as an LS1 or LS6, that might be a much better handling car than jamming the engine in behind the axle. That would be a really interesting car!!

The LS1 engine set up is 54lbs lighter than the 3.2 liter Porsche flat six that was in the car. Thats with the radiator and all.
A turbo 930 engine is almost 100 lbs more than the NA engines.

I'm just finishing a LS1 conversion in a 914 myself. Hope to have the done by early spring. I have another 914 with a SBC that I plan to sell as soon as the new car is done.
