8.1L 496 pass emissions for 5.7L TBI?
Hey I need to find out if a new 8.1L big block 496 will pass emissions for my 95 GMC Sierra with the 5.7L 350 TBI engine. That is a lot more cubes and with atleast cam, intake, exhaust probably more I need to make sure it will pass. I have a chance to pick up the 8.1 with 5k miles on it for under $1500. Please let me know what you think ASAP!
Thanks,
Mike

How do they test there, roller dyno? does your truck meet their weight requirement making it too heavy for the dyno and they just idle test it? I don`t think you could pass a visual inspection if they open the hood. Idle test you could probably pass without too much effort. Roller dyno.......not so sure on this one, if you wanted it bad enough you could probably do it but you are definently going to need to keep all the emissions crap. Worst comes to worst spike the tank with a little extra ethanol, cuts the hydrocarbon readings down instantly

yes rollar dyno. AWD is idle tested... I dont think I have ever had anyone open the hood in the ten years I have been driving. Anyways engine swaps arent illegal as long as you stay in the limits of the original limits...

Yeah they don`t pop the hood in illinois either unless you fail twice in a row. Engine swaps are legal as long as you put an engine in from the same family, but I`m not sure if a BBC was available in a 95 Sierra 1500, probably was available in a 2500 though.

the most important thing is that you use an engine from the same year as your vehicle or newer. you cant legally put an older engine in a newer vehicle.. well, i suppose it varies from place to place. if you use a newer engine and make sure all the emissions and stuff works then you shouldnt have any problems.

Good news. I probably should have done this in the first place! I called the garage where I get my stickers. You can put any newer engine in a vehicle...in mass anyways and you just pass emissions for that engine. So this engine im looking at is a 2004 8.1L 496. I just have to pass emissions for that motor and thats it. I am pretty pumped!
I called the guy about the motor though. Doesnt have injectors or coils no accessories either. I forgot to ask him if he had the ECU and harness. I am calling him again wednesday to setup a time to look at it. Do you guys think this is still a good deal at $1500 or b/o? The rest of the motor is complete with between 4-5k miles on it.

all of those pieces can be had at junk yards or if you go to other forums having to do with heavy trucks maybe someone has some parts. Im not sure if the 8.1 liter is still a part of the LS family so I dont know if Ls1 or the truck coils and injectors would work for you or not.

Still, sounds like a good price to me. I'd put one in my RX7 if it'd fit.

hmmm I see. So does it fit up to the T56? I know the 4L80e fits up to the LS motors and it comes standard on the 8.1L so does that mean it will bolt up to the T56 or is there a special bellhousing I am not hearing about?
*edit* or maybe the Allison comes with the 8.1?

The 8.1 could be had with either a 4l80 or an Allison. Our suburban has the 8.1 with the 4l80 and my buddy has the 8.1/Allison in his 2500HD. I think that the 4L80 is a much better everyday tranny. The Allison is stronger no doubt but it robs WAY too much power!!!
