Never done the swap but if memory serves for it to be legal it has to have all the emissions equip operational that came standard on that year car itself OR all the emissions equip from the motor/car that the donor engine came from, whichever is newer.
Example: 99 LS1 from a Trans Am into a pre 99 S10...you have to have all the smog requirements for the 99 Trans Am present and functional in your pre-99 S10........if the vehicle getting the LSx motor is newer then the motor being put into it, you have to have all the required smog equip from that year truck AND the required stuff from the "new" motor it is getting.
Cali smog laws are very confusing and it has been 7+ yrs since I enforced them so I am SURE a lot has changed......but that was the general breakdown for when I was working. I know it is sucky advice, but you may also want to ask around at bigger shops that have done swap to find out the actual current regulations.......given that a shop will be shut down or at least heavily fined if it does an "illegal" swap, they would at least know the rules (even if they don't always follow them ) Hope it helps a little.

Haha, Yeah that's me. Sorry man, mine is not smog legal. If it became a necessity I would do everthing in need to make it legal though. It would be pretty easy to utilize all the smog equipment but would be more work for me so I decided to bypass all that. One thing especially keeping me from going smog legal is the regulation of how far the CAT is allowed to be from the manifold. I think smog laws require a maximum of 6" this would be problematic because there is very little room to work with. I have since made long tubes and smog laws dont like those either . Either way I'd be willing to roll by your pad some time if you want to take a look at my setup. I live in Westchester right up the hill near LAX so I'm pretty close by. What swap is it that you have done already...a 944?

That's awesome...where'd you dyno that at? What did it put down? Are you using the factory porsche transmission? I was on the dyno all day today trying to figure out why I'm having trouble with my HPTuners. Seems everytime I shoot a tune theres no change in mixture...anyways. I'm going to try to get George Lara to tune it hopefully on Saturday. After that I'll probably be driving it again daily.

I'm doing a smog legal swap in my 92. I live in Arizona. My truck came with EGR on the 4.3 and the charcoal canister of course. So I'm leaving the EGR on my LS1 and putting the charcoal canister back in. Although since my truck didn't come with an air pump I'm deleting it off the LS1. I'm also putting 2 hi flow cats on it.I haven't finished my swap yet though, right now I am at the wiring stage and also still need to mount the fuel cell and run the fuel system so I've got abit to go.So I think pretty much what your truck came with, you need on the LS1 in order to pass emissions. Then I have heard the engine must be newer than the vehicle that you do the swap into? That isn't an issue for me though since my truck is 14 years old.

Dyno and tuning was done in Vegas. Its all Cali smog legal and pulled 318Hp and 338fpt. It is using the stock 944 turbo transaxle ( 213+ thousand miles on it!!!) for now but will be updating that soon hopefully( fresh rebuild and re-gearing). What are you running for a trans and rear end? Im wondering what i will need to swap out when i do my S10.
