Default Opinions on LS1 in a '70 Monte Carlo

My dad is building a '70 Monte Carlo he picked up for $1000. He's still doing body work so he's got plenty of time to choose a motor. So far he's been set on a 383 (doesn't like big blocks) but when I told him how much he could get an LS1 pullout for he started questioning it. When he first started the project he always said he would like fuel injection so this is the perfect way as far as I see it. What are your opinions?

The Monte Carlo basically sits on a 68-72 A body chassis. It shouldn't be any harder than a Chevelle swap. IMO go for it.

It would be fun to see a nice Twin Turbo system under that long Monte Carlo hood

That would be a sick swap. I love the early Monte. There was a post awhile back that specified a company that had LSX motor mounts for the 68-72 A bodies. I think if you search "chevelle" something will come up. After that, it should be a fairly straightforward swap since the car is pre-emissions and pre OBDII. IMO the only engine series your dad should be thinking about is Gen III and IV and the hard part should be deciding between a LS1/2/6/7, LQ4/9 or LM7/L33. I'd also love to see this thing boosted in some capacity.

I've been trying to get him to TT it since he got it. He's more partial to superchargers but doesn't want to cut up his hood to fit one on top, so he's been looking at centrifugal chargers lately.

Search doesn't seem to be working for me right now...

If I can get an LS1 going in my 240, we should be able to get it going in my MC.

Hopefully he see's it this way, too.

He started checking out ls1tech this morning, so hopefully he'll see this thread. Any comments would help in swaying him.

Ok, so I wasn't able to find that exact thread, but there are a ton of people on here who have LSX engines in early a-bodies. Also, I'd check out hotrodlane.cc(swapping an LSX into a '71 chevelle), lateral-g.net and pro-touring.com. There's one dude on there with a '72 GSX with an LS2. It's sweet.

Additionally, any past issues of PHR, SC, CHP or GMHTP will likely have info on early a-body swaps.
Hope this helps a bit.

Sorry for the newbness, but what's PHR, SC, CHP, and GMHTP? I don't have much of a domestic background yet.

For a tank like that, I'd go with a 6.0 (LQ9).

Go with a 6.0L. The LT1 isn`t worth doing unless you got it for free, the cost for all the "extras" (fuel system, electrical, etc) that you have to upgrade to when doing an EFI motor swap is about the same no matter what EFI engine you use, and the Iron block truck motors are dirt cheap. You can pick up 6.0L motors complete with the wiring, PCM, accys, underhood fuse box, etc for $1000. It seems like LT1`s are just as expensive, or more expensive than the iron truck motors.

If you go with a 6.0L you can run the L92 heads which have great flow and I think they are only around $700 a set from GM. Between that and a cam the 6.0L should make more power than a GEN I 383 and it will be a lot more driveable. with the right cam and heads the 5.7L`s can make 500RWHP and thats just with a cam and heads upgrade.

I was asking about LS1, not LT1.

What do the 6.0L come in?

Thanks. I found one for $1000 that's about 45 minutes away. Much easier than finding an LS1. I'll look into it more.

Hmm, I don`t know where I got the LT1 from, I must have been reading 2 different threads on different windows at the same time and confused them . Sorry about that.
