T-56 6spd in s10 for under 2K?
Hey all,
I have been stalking this board reading the s10 ls1s10ers posts and such and have decided that my questions really haven't been answered in terms of the transmission that I want to use but have yet to purchase. I am currently putting a 2000 LS1 out of a WS6 Trans Am that has been completely re-done with clevite bearings, arp hardware and cleaned and basically the only mods I will have is basically an LS6 cam, pushrods, springs, an LS6 intake and sanderson shortie headers. I don't want to spend a fortune (yet) as I just want to get this up and going. It will not see much time on the track, just a good bit of time on the street. What are my best options?
I was thinking that a used t56 is most likely hashed and is a bad idea. I was also thinking that for my HP needs the stocker clutch, flywheel, ect is fine. What would you all recommend ?
thank you in advance
Nate

Sorry,
After reading it again I wasn't too clear. I want a t-56/clutch combo that I can bolt right up to the engine and take the 350 odd HP without spending a fortune. Mounts and such we are fabbing ourselves.
Where are you getting them for 1200??

a stock T56 and LS6 clutch can handle 350hp no problem... but a stock T56 can't handle abusive shifting, so be wary of buying a used one, or better, go ahead and plan on having it rebuilt and upgraded before you put it in the car.

A stock GM T56 is factory rated up to 450 HP. Past those needs, go with the viper T56 which, correct me if I'm wrong, I think is rated to 550 HP. I've seen used T56s for as low as 1100, but more commonly they cost around 1400-1500. I think you should also factor in the cost of a rebuild because most people treat them poorly. Sure they can handle the HP, but as previously stated, they cannot take the abuse that people who are driving LS1 cars typically throw at them.

the nv is a no go. It's chunky and the shifts are rough. Not to mention that I don't think that it would fit in an s10 trans tunnel without some serious hammer work. The t56 is a great transmission that's why it's used in vipers and vettes. All we're saying is treat it nice.
I understand your concerns, and when you first start a project the $$$ can really be daunting, but you'll be so much happier once your get your project on the road. Get the t56, and if you can't afford a rebuild right now, wait until you can. It'll be worth it.
Sure there are other transmission that you can use like the TKO 500/600, t-5(I would certainly not reccomend it though), a Muncie 4 speed and I've even seen the MKIII supra's R134, but these require different bellhousing and alot more work. The t56 will bolt right up plus you get the benifit of double overdrive with a final drive ration of .50 which will allow for great MPG if you were at all conerned.

Jared has my pcm in route he can program in chinese as long as he understands it and it works. I can understand wanting a stick but the price is just so damm high for everything unless you can find a complete package that does not have problems. I realize if you bomb a 4l60 it runs up there right quick too but you have a little more selection thanks to it being in fullsize trucks.
