That's some cool info. The main thing I'd wonder about though is can these new trans be beefed up to take some serious power?

I agree. Who cares what body you put an LS based motor/blower/trans in. As long as they perform great, I'll probably like it. This chapter of the LS1 Tech forum is called: Conversions and Hybrids!

Yes, I am happy to see a project on just about anything, but I prefer the car to be at least somewhat attractive before that kind of money is dumped into it.

Even sleeper cars should be a little smooth. Then again some people I am sure do not car for my hummer look a like conversion so it's all good.

I'm sorry I misread the question. I think you are right that it is the 6L80 is the Escalade/Denali and Sierra Denali.

Actually the cost is the reason it's rare. All cars were converted from regular notch-roof cars and had a tiny truck opening. Not very good for a car that was marketed as a 2 door sedan. It was made to qualify for NASCAR in '86-'87 and made the Grand Prix and Monte Carlo more aerodynamic. Since when is NASCAR gay? (besides Jeff Gordon)

I LOVE those late year mid size GM's rear drives...

The TCM is in the pan and comed with the trans, but I think it needs the 58x reluctor wheel and the new style E36 PCM for everything to work. I think till something is used to interface the tans to a Gen III PCM or swap reluator wheels and getting a later PCM it would work.

They are almost the same size! But the ****** is a lot bigger around! Lol...

So, weight gain won't be a real factor in anything but an all-out track build, then?

What about parasitic loss? I'm not sure if that's a real valid question. Sorry if it's not.

Sorry for the newb questions, I've only owned one auto and that was my first car -- a TH350 behind a SBC 383. Owned nothing but 4, 5, and 6-speeds ever since. However, I'm just going to have to admit, there's just seemingly no advantage at all to rowing your own gears over these new A6's to me. Fun... fun only goes so far. It's almost like I'd be stupid to get a new Camaro with an M6...

Here's some additional information from John at Speartech:.

I think this is the solution that everyone has been searching for!

The cost seems initially high, but when you consider it also comes with the right computer, an ETC pedal assembly, computer programmed correctly, every thing labeled and ready to plug in, this is a bargain.

With a Bare 58X relector engine/6L80/90E transmission and this harness, you are ready to go.

Now to decide what to put on in.......

__________________________________________________ __________
Here's an overview of what we offer:

This package was specifically developed for the new LS2/LS7 crate engines with the 58X crankshaft sensor. The complete LS2/6L80E, LS7/6L90E custom stand alone wiring harness and computer package sells for $1695.00.

The package includes the following:

A new custom length, stand-alone wiring harness. The harness includes a check engine light, diagnostic connector, fuel pump relay, fuse block, and labeled wires for easy hookup to the battery, ignition switch, and fuel pump. Wires are also included for tach, speed, electric fans, and A/C functions where applicable. These custom stand alone harnesses are built for full function, closed loop control, and designed for non-emissions use (no post-cat O2's, purge canister, or fuel tank evap interface). Our harnesses can be built to your desired length specifications.

The package comes with the factory GM ECM fully programmed for your application including: VATS (vehicle anti-theft system) removal, emissions equipment removal (whatever you don’t need or are not using on your swap such as: catalytic converters, rear O2 sensors, fuel tank pressure, EVAP), torque management removal, etc.

The reprogramming lets your new engine run properly without the “check engine” light being on unless there is a problem with the engine that needs to be addressed.

Since the engines all utilize Electronic Throttle Control (ETC), the electronic accelerator pedal is also included in the package.

As with all Speartech packages our systems can be serviced with any late model diagnostic equipment designed for GM vehicles.

Options available:

Extra length (beyond 4’): $75.00

Emissions package (wiring for rear O2 sensors and charcoal canister control): $50.00

Sensor package (includes correct front O2 sensors and MAF sensor for one-stop shopping): $300.00

Thanks,

John

I don't see much benefit to the drag racers with the A6.
The gear spacing from 1st to 2nd is steep.

The benefit in the current truck gear ratio arrangement is for people
who off road, with big tires, and drive on the street.

This tranny would allow you to run 31-35" tires, a deep 4:10- 4.56 gear,
and still be able to drive it on the street.

C6's run this transmission and people say it is a MUCH better transmission than the old 4L60e. I've been told that it doesnt shift like a traditional transmission (ie. 1>2>3>4.. etc) but can shift from 2nd to 4th, 6th to 1st, etc.
