Although the cast aluminum oil pans do contribute somewhat to the structual strength of the engine, they are not critical. The main purpose of using the cast aluminum pans is for Noise, Vibration, and Harsness (NVH) control. In other words, it's just another way to quiet things down so the socker moms don't whine about noise.
Using a stamped steel pan will not cause any structural problems.

Also, from what I have seen of the stamped steel pans is that they have a substantially thick rail that acts as the bolting flange which I am sure adds strength. Is it as good as the stock aluminum pan? I can't be sure, but either way it should be fine.
