Default over heating LS1 in 35 chevy sedan

i have a 35 sedan with a vertical flow radiator. i bought a CSR thermostat housing to redirect my lower rad hose. i have the hose coming from the top of my water pump going to the top of my radiator & the bottom hose going to the bottom. is this my problem being this is a reverse flow system? the car over heats after driving it about 5 miles. thanx in advance for your help.

LS engines are not reverse flow. Radiator cap good? thermostat good? does it overheat while in traffic or on the road, aka, moving thru the air?

Purge the system of air... a air pocket can cause over heating.

Try draining the system and fill it again from the top radiator hose (undone from the radiator), once it is filled slowly, then reconnect the upper radiator hose and fill the rest of the radiator.

Is the coolant actually boiling over or is the gauge just high?
What kind of a fan are you running?

Try and remove the T-Stat and see how it runs with out it. While it is out, check to make sure it function correctly (pot of water on the stove).

Default rad

Do you have any pics of your radiator setup? Is it Aluminum? Is your fan a puller or pusher, should be a puller and wired as such? Some are wired as pullers but designed as pushers. Any tight bends in hoses that may be restricting flow. Air in the system is usually the culprit. One other thing, is air being forced into through the rad and not allowed to flow around it.

I had all the overheating blues in my hybrid porsche w/sbc. I ended up using a big aluminum radiator with good shrouding and with two big puller fans.

I doing a 41 coupe with LS1 right now I'd like to see some pics of your car...Thanks Tim

I know a few guys with these early cars and running almost stock small blocks and I know some had issues with them running hot. Most of the guys have swtiched out to Aluminum radiators. I have the stock in my 48 right know and it isnt running as of yet and probally not till next summer so I can't verify if I will be having an issue as well. Have you taken the radiator out and sent it out to be thoughly cleaned? With these old radiators the previous owners where natorious for using pepper and stop leak for fixing leaks instead of having them properly fixed.
