The more I research making power w/ a Ford the more I want an LSX.
I run HPDEs with my Z06 and was on the edge of making it a track only car and putting a cage in it.
Well things have taken a turn... I'm getting a Panoz GT-RA for a track only car.
It's powered by a 5.0 w/ a K&N, headers, and straight pipes... they're around 250 crank HP.
The motor most likely has GT-40 heads as it has the Explorer manifold which is pretty much the cobra manifold w/ the cool snake on it.
W/o flycutting the pistons a max effort H/C will get arond 320rwhp... which is this 2500lb car will give me the same hp/lb ratio as my Z.
It's just so much easier to make big power w/ an LSX... I guess part of it is the fact that LSX is god, stock compression isn't 9.0:1 like the ford, and hte heads are a superior design.
I'd like to have a stock LS6 in this thing w/ the trans from a fireturd... but I'll most likely take the cheap route and build a road race 302 in my spare time as that way I don't have to screw w/ the trans/driveshaft.
I wonder how easy it'd be to swap it... do most swaps from firebirds/camaros come w/ the PCM etc?

What is the weight of the Ford ?.. and your right.. it is very easy to make some HP with simple mods, bolt-on and a good tunner ! Have you searched to see if other have already built or swappe to a Gen III/IV motor ?
Getting a good Pull out can be tricky... if you don't have the accessories, wiring and other parts. I would suggest that you find a complete pull out with all front accessories, wiring and PCM.
I am sure if you have the room in the engine bay and you can do some welding and fab'in.. this would not be a hard swap.
How about a LS2 at 400HP ! from a vette or GTO (swap oil pans)

Don't know how this will be accepted seeing this is LSX country, but if you stick with Ford, it would just drop right in. Off the shelf Ford Performance 400HP forged 351 = no conversion headaches. Remember too, the Panoz was designed around Ford power, so installing an LSX may present some challenges. This is not a "what makes better power" or LSX vs. SBF, but stricktly a point of view. Just some thoughts.

Fords make PLENTY of power. They really like turbos.

Hey Brian... You can get a used PCM for about $150. You will need a factory harness to make life easier, and just strip out the wiring that isn't needed. The PCM pinouts are in the stickies, as well as descriptions (if you need them) of what is and what is not required. If you go this route and need any help just holla.

aftermarket stand alone plug and play engine management harnesess are available for sale now thru various vendors, and sponsors here, alot easier than hacking up a oem harness,
also a alloy ls2 block with ls6 heads and
agressive cam will bring up displacement and even in its stock form with cast exhaust manifolds the ls2 produces over 400bhp, u will also be able to reuse the existing headers tubes and exhaust sytem. just hack of the exhaust flanges and weld back on ls1 exhaust port flanges, the ford and ls1 exhaust port spacing are dam near identical. the biggest obstacle may the mounts and trans, but the t56 is a top notch trans and worth the swap imo.
all alloy engine with way more power, displacemement, and potential and weighs less than 5.0 to boot.
sounds like a done deal to me

Nope... no more cage in the Z... Z goes back to waxerdom!
I don't think the swap is worth the headache... I'm most likely going to get a cam and a TFS track heat manifold and call it a day. 270ish rwhp is possible through stock gt-40 heads which are on this motor.
The trans was replaced (per the log book) in July and it only has 7 hours on it since then. I'd rather have an LSX/T-56, but I think that tweaking this motor is the way to go.
Plus... I might start building a 331 on the side for something different.

Closed the deal on the actual car today... this is one of a few leased by penske and re-painted for promotional work. The body/paint is 10000x better than the other school cars.
Here's the stock stock stock 5.0
