Default suggestions for an injected transplant into 66 Impala

I'm wanting to update to an injected V-8 in the wifes 66 Impala. I've noticed some really good deals on 5.3s around my area. Has anyone swapped one of these into a 60s Fullsize Chevy car?

I believe I have seen one or two on the site. The 5.3L would be nice, but if you can get your hands one one, the LQ9 would be better. Hood clearance is something to be aware of with the truck motors, though I doubt you will have much problem in a B-body. While a LSx block with all the trimmings would be the coolest, it would also be the most expensive. It shouldn't be dificult at all to get a Gen III or Gen IV into your Impala. Use the small block pedastals, and do a bit of reading on swaps on this forum and others, and you will figure out what you difficulty points are. Overall, I think it would be a rpetty sweet car when you are done.

A 5.3L would be still a great swap for just cruz-in around in that Impala.. You should have no problem with any of the Gen III/IV engines.

those 5.3L can be pickup on the cheap, $300-800 with everything and still have EFI for good milage / drivablity and 285rwhp to boot. A few mod and your into the 300+ HP range.

If your not going after big HP and TQ.. the 5.3L are a cheap way to go to upgrade to the latest tech.

Thats what I was thinking....its just a cruiser but I wanted a little more power with better mileage and drivability. Just about anything would be an upgrade over the stock 283/PG it has now. It's only 195 HP and thats not at the rear wheels. I'm about to do a disc brake upgrade over the holidays. My 03 Avalanche has the 5.3 and I've been pretty happy with it. I've seen some 5.3s with everything for $500-600. I couldn't rebuild the 283 for that.

Try searching on Impala or Carprice.. you should find some hits. If I recall right.. S&P did a 60's Impala.. they are at www.hotrodlane.cc and check there swap section.

To keep everything going on a smaller budget and to help in installation, I would be best if you get a complete pull out with everything from Trans to front Assembly (water pump, alternator, PS pump, etc), wiring and PCM.

I agree with lsxyj, get the 4l60e, it would a great match up for 66 Impala. The 4l60e would not be any bigger than the TH350 or TH400.

I love the 65-66 Impala.. great lines. You can get 6 family members or friends on a Cruz nite..! how cool is that !

Ya the 4L60E has my vote too. With a streetable tune in it, you should get that big sled in the high teens to low 20's for mpg's!

Now we're talkin'.....I would definitely buy the whole package. Another question though, if I get the whole package, will there be any tuning required? If so, who does that kind of stuff?

Yes, there will still be some tuning required, because you do not use all of the accys. IE: the PCM will no longer be connected to the BCM, the emissions system will no longer have a fuel tank pressure sensor.....etc. So you will need to delete some codes and you will also have to program the VATS (vehicle anti theft system) out.

wait4meperformance and speartech both do programming and are familiar with what needs to be changed in a conversion situation.

I used Wait4meperformance, quick service and very little cost to get up and running. I am still running with has basic tune and codes deletion.

Speartech is a great place for having your harness modified and your PCM tuned. Good service, competative price. Overdrive is a wonderful thing, go with the 4L60E

My Dad did a 96 LT1/4L60E into his '64 Impala this year. Swapped the cam and cleaned up the heads before it went in. Sounds and runs great. Gets pretty good mileage also as that's what he wanted.

Its no speed demon but he cruises in that thing whenever he can. Looks perfectly at home sitting in there and gets a lot of compliments at the cruise in.

Go for it. LSx would be nice but for just cruising around, an LT1 works fine also.
