I Need Help... T-56 mated with Gen I SBC
Hello,
I have a 1971 Chevelle A-Body. The Current motor is a 383 sbc with a d1sc Procharger.
I was going to rebuild my auto, but i ran across one hell of a deal on a brand new T-56 out of an 08 GT500.
I was wanting to know what i would have to do to mate this t56 up to my sbc as far as a bell housing goes, as well as any other usefull information i would need.
Where to get these parts and how much I'm looking to spend would also be helpful.
Thanks

As was said above I know the LT1 T56 is a bolt on. You may be able to use a mcleod modular bellhousing http://www.carcraft.com/techarticles...ing/index.html But at that point it is probably cheaper to swap for a LT1 T56 or swap the input shaft and front cover.

Last I heard, using an LSx T56 with a McLeod (or Lakewood?) bellhousing to adapt it to the SBC was the preferred method. That way to can retain your original mechanical clutch actuation instead of converting to hydraulic and using a backwards (pull-type) LT1 clutch.

These guys make an adapter plate for an LS T56 to bolt to a chevy small block bellhousing (Muncie). I'm not sure if the ford has a different input shaft length, but I'll bet they know.

Now this info hits on LT1 T56s, but is geared towards LS1 T56. I'm in the process of doing an LS1 sourced T56 in my 77 Z28, using stock mech clutch setup. I'll be using a McLeod adapter - I am more comfortable with their parts then a no-name guy.
I do not know the differences with the stang t56, 1st thing that comes to mind is potentially a different spline count, which may be easier to fix with a new clutch then an input shaft. But that is way out of my realm of knowledge.
Maybe give Classic Chevy 5-Speed a ring about specs. They are a Tremec dealer.

ATS used to make an adapter plate for the LS1 bellhousing to SBC block... It was pretty cheap. You could possibly get an LS1 bellhousing off ebay and bolt it on if you're lucky, then use the ATS adapter spacer... But like was already mentioned above, do some research on the input shaft before you buy anything, because nothing out there may work and you'd be out a bunch of money.

i just did this to my 72 ss with a 1970 406 in it. i used a lt1 t56 with a stock bellhousing. only thing that i had to buy to make it work was a centerforce t56 to pre 1986 sbc flywheel and a spec stage 5 clutch. i think as long as you get a complete lt1 unit everything will work fine.

as the others have said I think you would def be time, and money ahead just to find an lt1 bellhousing, front plate and input shaft, or a junk lt1 t56 to rob the parts from. I have done this twice, well actually the opposite, went from 2 lt1 t56 making them lsx t56's. That way you know everything is right, still have hydraulic clutch, and common parts.
