Default Firewall Grommet

I am mounting my pcm under the dash in my 66. I am looking for a grommet for the firewall and the size of the hole to drill to pass the harness thru the firewall. Where did you purchase your grommet, it looks like it will have to be a large grommet 1 3/4" or 2"?

I will let the secret out (as if I already haven't.) Seals-it split grommet is the way to go. They can be picked up at Summit or from Seals-it. At least that was my solution.

Plenty of length on the inside.

Now I need to decide what I'm going to cover the harness with.

WOW!!! I never saw this grommet before! How is the sealing material? Is it nice and soft and stretchy so it seals around the wiring??

I really like that idea. You can make the hole bigger, or even oval like mine turned out to be, and still seal it with a neat looking grommet.

....wheels are turning.....

ok, here it is. you have to drill a 2 3/8" hole in the firewall and the inner hole on the grommet is 1.5" and will stretch to about 2". sorry i could not get a good engine bay shot as my head hides the hole. the interior shot shows it well enough.

I have 4 of these and they are $12 each shipped. $13 with paypal.

How does the grommet stay on the firewall? I don't see any screws in it?

Have you never seen the typical retention method used by grommets? The sheet metal of the firewall will fit into the groove on the OD of the grommet.

Kennard Industries is the manufacturer of the grommet shown above. Can be purchased online from McMaster-Carr for a couple of dollars.

Those kennard grommets are great. I just couldnt find one that would work and not have to make a huge hole. They are PERFECT if you need to pass hard lines through sheet metal, because they will seal if the tubing is misaligned and at weird angles.

I like that split type seal, because I made my hole for the PCM connectors oval. It was the only way they'd go through. So, that split design would allow me to pass the wires, get the hole dressed, and then just slip that in place to keep the wires from touching the hole.

Im going to spend alittle more time on this during my next build... The first go around, I already had the motor in before I made the hole. So I was limited in how much room I had. This time though, Im getting all my firewall cutting/sealing otu of the way first. Since I know where everything will end up...

Good info in this thread though. I couldnt find any good grommets during my first build.

If anyone knows where I can get some nice panel grommets that are big and OVAL...let me know. those are the toughies.

J.
