Default MIL stays on scan tool says off

My MIL was working properly. Now it stays on even though scan tool says MIL off. any thoughts? thanks

unplug the ECU, turn the ignition on. if the light is ON you have a crossed wire somewhere in your ignition/gauge/dash wiring. if the light is off, remove the pin from the connector at the ECU so its a lose wire. then reconnect the ecu, turn the ignition back on and probe the pin and wire for voltage. if its coming from the ECU, you have an ecu problem. if its coming from the harness, there is a cross somewhere in your harness.

Thanks Joe. I unplugged and its still on, so I guess the wire is getting power from somewhere else. I guess this would require a short w/ a hot wire somewhere in harness?

I figured it out. The light socket was grounded on the instrument cluster. The PCM activates mil by grounding it. Thanks for your help.
