Default TKO 500 5 speed or T56 6 speed

Any advice on which transmisson I should go with my 2002 ls1 swap into my 68 Camaro .

Thing is I already own a newer TKO 500 5 speed with only 20,000 miles mabay. Plus the mechancial speedo to gauge is all working and correct and that ones less thing i will have to deal with. Though I will need a bell housing, flywheel and clutch setup to make it work with the ls1.

The t56 I would most likely aquire with the ls1 but I didnt know if it would be worth the trouble and the extra money to get the t56 hooked up ie speedo, drive shaft length, cross member, shifter location in the tunnel ect.

What are your thoughts about what I should use

ANY Chevy V8 bellhousing will work. Your TKO should be the same dimentions as a Muncie or Saginaw as to the input shaft, clutch spline (fine spline). So that part is easy. Chevy sells a flywheel that supports the use of a Muncie behind an LSx. The clutch then would be anything that worked on any 1st Gen small/big block Chevy V8. Your gonna hafta cut the drive shaft, (if the TKO was not previously in the car). Speedo is good as you stated, either mech. or electric is usable with the TKO. The only other problem is the pivot ball for the clutch linkage cross shaft (Z bar), has no place the screw into on an LSx block. Make a bracket that mounts off the bellhousing bolts. That should be it............

The TKO was in the car before behind a 327. I understand about the clutch ball fo rthe z bar, though i have yet to see any pictures of anyone else making that kind of bracket. So i wouldnt really know where to start on my own. Therefore i was just going to convert to a hydro clutch.

More info IM running a 12 bolt rear end with 373 gears.

In your opinion should i stay with the TKO or should I change to the T56?

sdparts.com has a z bar bracket that botls to the bell housing. The 1" setback motor plates will allow you to keep your current trans and driveline. Stick with the TKO.

I agree,if you go with the t56 you are going with a heavier and bigger trans that is not as strong, and about the only thing you gain is the sixth gear .A little better shifter position with the tko also. You already have the tko and are set up for it.It would be a no brainer for me.

Does the TKO trans have anything in common with the T-5 (besides that they're both 5-speeds), or are they totally different animals??

If you have the TKO already , run it.
-won't have to mod the trans tunnel
-won't have to get the adapter for speedo
-Keisler makes a bellhousing, clutch hydraulics etc to make it work w the LS1

I debated the two myself. If I had a TKO already, I definatley would have went that way!

question as Classic Gary stated "ANY Chevy V8 bellhousing will work" with the ls1 is that true? I used my TKO with a 327 will that bellhousing mount to a LS1 2002?

Do a search here for LS1 and Muncie. It's my understanding that the 168 tooth flywheel housing are a direct boltup with the adapter pilot bushing. The 153 tooth bell housings are more complicated.

I made a mistake, It's GOT to be a large flywheel bellhousing, which my '57 Chevy bellhousing is, and it's got bolt holes for the brackets for the "block side" pivot ball. A chevy truck bell won't work because the big hole in the middle for the bearing retainer is larger for a truck, but you could machine a spacer ring to make up the difference. there are pics at the Webshots site in my siggy of the bell bolted up and the bracket of the bell for the block side pivot ball. oh yeah, TKO !!

They're both 5-speeds, and owned by Tremec. Many differences between the transmissions.

well looking like im going to keep my TKO. I found out I do need a bellhousing, flywheel and clutch assy. but i found a package deal for all new for 450 bucks. Im going to use that bracket for my pivot ball it like 59 bucks, but a lot cheaper then getting a hydraulic coversion kit for like 600 dollars as well. I will use that money for my unisteer rack and pinion im also puttign in.
