Default Blocking off the nipples anyone

Id like to block off the heater nipples on my water pump so I have more clearance for my crossover on my turbo setup. I clamped some rubber caps on but Im afraid they wont hold up well with the heat. Plus I could really use the 1 1/2" clearance. I thought about removing the tubes and drilling and tapping the holes to 3/4 npt and using screw in plugs. Anyone done this? Suggestions? Pics?

Pull the nipples out, tap for NPT thread, and put a plug in them....simple as that.

I hate to tell say ,if you block them off you will overheat for sure, coolant must flow through them.

I dont understand why overheating would occur for some not others so I looked at some t-stats I had laying around and I think I figured out why. The older style 1 piece thermostat and water neck have a flat disc on the heater bypass portion of the thermostat and the newer design has three holes on that disc allowing coolant to bypass it. I just cant see GM allowing their engines to overheat from a plugged up heater core. What do you guys think?

when you have your heat off there is no flow though the heater core. a valve opens and closes for temp you want.same as plugging lines off

I know I plugged mine off and at idle it would overheat, I put a loop and it cured the problem.

On all the LSx cars that I have seen the heater core does not have a valve, it is constant flow and they regulate the heat by closing off that section of the heater box.

On my install I used the valve from the El Camino so it does shut off the coolant flow if I don`t have the heat on. A few people have said this causes problems, but I haven`t had any problems in the 25k+ miles that I have put on so far. IIRC John B was/is? running the same heater setup as me.

A few people have recommended a valve from a astro van (I forget what year) because it has a built in bypass for when you turn the heater off.
