Default Give me a hand here! Myth or Fact? Thanks guys

My LS2 did not come with a dowel in the back of the crankshaft for the flywheel alignment hole. I have worked with small and big chevys and these have always had the alignment dowels for the flywheel/flexplate.

Several larger parts places couldn't get the dowel because they come in a 10 pack from GM and they don't want to stock the other 9 dowels.

I finally have one coming in sometime this week through a buddy here in Omaha. He and their parts guy called GM direct to make sure it is the correct part. My buddy is a mechanic for a local dealer and he said the dowel may or may not be needed.

So Myth or Fact do LS2 engines have an alignment dowel or not? If your LS1/LS3/LS7 came with an alignment dowel let me know. Please state what engine you are running and dowel or no dowel.

Please no speculation, if yours had a dowel or know that it has a dowel let me know. Some guys on the forum state they have run the flywheel with out the dowel pin. My concern is the balance of the engine, I want to remove doubt so that can be eliminated now rather than later.

I've got an LS7 crate motor, and it had no dowel. The flywheel and crank both have holes for it, though. The LS7 comes with a clutch on it from GM. The holes for the dowel were arranged as though it was there when I took the clutch off. I've since reassembled it and run it that way, and it runs great.

Also, I don't remember seeing a dowel pin in the couple of LS1 GTO's I've done clutches on.

I guess in the 500, or so, gen 1 chevys I have torn down, I have never seen a dowel in the end of the crank. My LS1 doesn't have one either.

my 6.0 lq4 never had one, and to tell you the truth, i havent seen one in a long time in a gen 1 or b/b, and i have had a ton of them-usually i rebuild an engine, and have it balanced, so that is not an issue
the dowl pin is so close to the center of the crank, dont know if it would affect bal anyway, if it was balanced with the pin, and removed

If there was a dowel, it was probably for the factory for error proofing and ease of assembly. The operator could just put the flywheel on without having to visually align the holes thus saving assembly time. I wouldn't worry about it. By the way, my LQ4 does not have one.
