Is my car unusually slow?
Hey all. Glad they have this new Convertibles area. Anyways take a look at my mods and then at my track times. My car just seems unusually slow for all I have done to it. It dynod only 290 RWHP with all these mods. I attempted tuning on it but ran into problems with the company that did it and took the tune off. The LS6 intake I just put on so no new times with that. I weigh about 230 lbs and the car has dropped about 115 lbs with lighter mods and weight redux. I live in Michigan with good elevation and it was a decent 70 degrees or so with low humidity, so none of that is a factor.
WS6 Wheels from a 2002 Trans Am
SLP Loudmouth Cat-back exhaust system
"Free Ram Air" cutout mod
K&N Air Filter
Smooth Air bellows on the intake
SLP Intake Lid
Throttlebody Coolant Bypass
BMI Auxiliary Transmission cooler
TCI Super Streetfighter 3500 stall converter
Energy Suspension Polyurethane Transmission mount
Energy Suspension Polyurethane Torque Arm Mount Bushings
180 ' thermostat
Jantzer Ported and Polished Throttlebody
BFG Drag Radials on back.
Flow Tech Long Tube Headers
Offroad Ypipe
EGR system removed
AIR system removed
'Cats' removed
Weight reduction
3:42 gears
NGK Spark Plugs
Taylor Plug Wires
Hypertech Tuning
LS6 intake
Any thoughts? What does a stock 98-00 run anyways? I never ran the car stock. Just seems like my MPH is awful low, but my 60' is great i think.

Seems a little slow. Are you experienced on the track? Also with your mph off and the car running slow you may want to get it dyno tuned. You can also open her up a little more by adding an 01+ LS1/LS6 intake. This can add a few more ponies really quick. I saw a dyno chart that made a 20hp difference. Check this page out/ see intake manifold swap.

Well it sounds to me like you have a lot of exhaust stuff and not much intake stuff. You need to be able to get the air in as fast as you can get it out. Putting a big exhaust on a car and nothing else can slow one down. I saw you have a bunch of little stuff for the intake but thats not the big gains you are looking for. And the big converter hurts you at the dyno. Im sure the ls6 intake helped you out a bit, but try something like some rockers or something of that nature. Hope it helps

RGizzard - Thanks for the response, but I don't think you thoroughly read my post. I've already had it dyno tuned once and ran into issues but it is on the list. I also JUST installed an ls6 intake - although those times don't reflect that. I think my 60' shows that I know what I'm doing on the track. I just wondered what other convertibles are running with similiar mods. I know the hp is low - the tuners supposedly found about 18 HP when they tuned it, but the curve was all screwed up after 5K rpms and it actually made the car slower. So that's why I took it off. I plan to retune again, but I'm debating over a cam, and if I get a cam I will just wait until then.
BC56- what induction mods am I missing here? I have the bellows, lid, free ram air, and ported tb, EGR removal, 180 thermostat and TB bypass.

Something is not working right(poss tuning) because my car ran 12.94 @105 in stock form with a 1.95 60 ft so sounds like it falling off after you leave the line .How many miles on your car ,what was your 1/8 mile times compared to your 1/4 times. 1/8 should be 86-92 mph and 1/4 should be 110-114 ..imo

I have a 99 with the bolt-ons and thats about it. I usually deal with the old school motors. I have a 94 conv. with a carberated 383 and I am just thinking about what the engine needs to make power. The things you listed for the intake side just seem like a bunch of little things that dont really make up a big intake jump. Yea they all help but youve got much more exhaust flow than intake flow. So you might actually be slowing it down cause you do not have enough back pressure. Just throwing some things at ya. Hope it helps.

1/8 mile 8.230 @ 83.460 MPH
Also I have trapped as high as 105.5 in the 1/4 a few times if that matters.
Car has 65K miles on it. I always attributed my cars slowness to convertible weight, but its really not that much more, plus I've lost weight on the car. I was also told the stock 2:73 gears were holding me back, but I've upgraded those as well - although the gain from those after a converter were only about .08 which wasn't worth it.
The car ran a 13.63 @102.90 with a 2.05 60' with just a lid and catback and free ram air if that reference helps. So my times have improved alot, but my mph sure hasn't.
bc56f100 - What other intake mods are there that I havent done? Only thing I can thing of is FTRA and ported maf - and i went the ported maf route and removed it already because it did nothing for me.

Im not to sure what else you could do for the intake I am not real big into the ls1 right now. Hopefully someone else can say something if there is. But all we have down here in Pensacola Fl is 8th mile tracks, and 8.2's isnt bad. It just sounds like your loosing it up top.

He should be running low 12's easily with all the boltons he has on his car as I installed a yank ST-3500 and ran 12.33 @109 with no other mods so yes theres something wrong with his combo also with no back seat and nittos with hypertech I ran 12.78 @103 stock . Cant wait to run again when I put my PT4000 in and headers with some 3.42's and hopefully make it into the 11's @115 or so michigan is a good place to run wish I could go up there sometime just dont want to drive 14 hrs

Yes Michigan is a good state to drag in as the altitude here is pretty low around 300-500 feet I believe at the track I race at. My friend with a 02 SS and similiar setup runs 12.3's. However he weighs about 100 lbs less than me, isn't a convertible, and has dropped about 200 lbs more off his car than I. I'm hoping that the LS6 intake I just installed my give me a nice boost - perhaps the car was choking for air a bit and that might get me some better results from my other induction mods as well (which never seemed to do anything except the lid). The car needs a tune badly as well- I bet I could squeeze another 20 HP out of that. 290 RWHP for all my mods is pretty low though - I guess I should be happy I've pulled a 12 second slip with so much weight and so little HP.
