Default It went Boom!

Well, down goes another c5 diff. This is number 3 that my car has claimed.

I was launching the car at 3500 rpms and did not make it out of the hole. I came off the clutch and bam. So now I need to upgrade and want to know who makes the strongest case out there. This rear end was a built up DTE unit completed with the billet side cover.

Wow !!! What level rear end was that ?? Sorry to hear that you are going to be without the vette for awhile Mark.

I have the stg III with brace from DTE. Hope she can handle all the torque the new 402 is going to make. Anyways Mark good luck getting her fixed or replaced. Seems like everything has doubled in price since 2005. WTF !!!

How are you guys breaking these diffs like this? Seems like it has to be extreme wheel hop or something to that nature.

I have broken 3 as well but it was all due to wheel hop.
Looks like you have the DTE brace? I have the same setup, I hope mine will hold.

It was a cross between a 4 and a 5. I even had the billet side cover. The car had no chance to wheel hop. The minute I cam off the clutch that car went boom. I have never had any wheel hop in the car it either hooks or spins the tires. This night it was hooking. I had 17 psi hot in my et streets when this happened.

Very interesting, no clue how you could break it like that with the car just hooking or spinning. Maybe a shaft but not splitting the case. It had to have happened over time, but if you are saying the car never wheel hopped since installing the diff I have no idea what could have caused it. Hard launches at the track shouldn't split the case like that.

Yea, I know it is weird. The last one I broke was weird as well. I killed the cross shaft inside the posi. Even DTE thought it was odd the way I broke the last one considering I have a manual car. I guess I have some special breaking stuff touch.

I am on my third or fourth rear but every one of mine was wheel hop. But since I added the DTE brace and hardened output shaft and built rear with the 3.90s I havent had any trouble. But I havent had it at the track either.

Oh, I have lost all my rear ends on the starting line. I come out the clutch and they go boom.

Hmm... intriguing no less.

Wheel hop is the primary killer; but shock load can do it as well with super high grip.
Instantaneous shock loads can exceed the strengths afforded by the parts.

where you on drag radials or bias tires. you posted that you have a ram dual disk, it is my understanding that the twin disks hit the drive train alot harder.

Still not 100% sure, but I am assuming it is a 1 based on where the vent is located. I will not know exactly until I pull it out next week.

Sig...sorry to hear that. Mine exploded also...never had hop or any launch problems....it just snapped.
With the Twin Disk...I be sure to take all the slack out of the drivetrain by slowly tripping the first light, then upping my rpms to almost launch rpm and easing the clutch out enough to pull forward and trip the stage light. This way all the slack is out and the shock load mentioned above is at a minimum.
Also, slip-slip-slip...that clutch out of the hole. I also lowered my launch rpm from 6500 to 5200 and upped my psi to 13.5 from 11.5 and play with the throttle to get it to bite easier. It took about 12 runs to get my sixty foot back but i just hit a new best of 1.47.
I have a RPM Diff and replaced the ring and pinion with a cyro treated one from DTE. Good luck.
