Default exhaust question

so i have noticed some of the high dollar exhaust are nothing more than tips attached to straight pipes and attach to the cats, am i wrong or would it not be the same to do this yourself and save some money???? i could be very wrong but i was just curious

on a side not im looking for a set of longtubes, possibly an exhaust and a set of 3.42 gears(ive heard this is a good gear for racing but still very streetable on highway driving)

If you know a good exhaust shop, yes the straight pipe type of system could be done cheaper.

Just make sure the shop has a good mandrel bender and someone that is a good welder. A friend on mine try this route and went to a questionable cheaper shop. The exhaust system turned out marginal at best. After a short period he ditch the system and bought the Borla XR-1 system. Short story, it ended up costing him about 175% of what the XR-1 system cost. Personally I am a firm believer in 'Do it right the first time and do it once.'.

If that is the case, then you should be able to get a system like the Borla XR-1 or the SLP loudmouth for a fraction of the cost.
