First Time Vette purchase, good choice for dd?
Hey,
Looking at buying a used C5/C6 Automatic vette. I’m not too hard on vehicles, it will get the normal thrashing that you just have to do from time to time but for the most part I will just be putting a lot of highway miles on it say 200 miles at a time on it as well as the normal city miles. I guess my biggest question is how long do these cars typically last mileage wise with good maintenance. Just looking to really get my moneys out of it and enjoy it as well. Im looking to spend around $20K. Am I thinking out of my mind or is this do-able?
I have searched some around here and other threads, just figured I'd throw out my own post looking for more info to add to it. Automatics, High Mileage, etc..

Well Personaly for a highway car I would go M6 just b/c of the six gear better gas mileage....but if a4 is your cup of tea then get it, its your car...but for that price range you will have to go with a c5 but you can find a nice very clean frc with 40k to 60k mileage, for 20k or alittle below if you look hard enough...but a dd vette is very do-able just treat it right and it will treat you right! Hope this help and hope to see ya in the club!!

C6 auto is a six speed starting in 2006. My 2006 coupe was a great car. Very comfortable. Drove very nice. Wife even loved driving it. Of course, it was just a bit too cushy and not raw enough for me, so I had to trade it for the Z06.
If you can swing an '06+ C6, that would be my recommendation. But I don't think you'll find one for $20K.
My mother-in-law drives a 2001 A4 coupe, and it's still a nice car. But getting my automatic C6 was almost like driving a performance Cadillac in comparison.

I daily drive my '99 FRC 100 miles per day - it has 177k miles on it now. After adding heads, cam, intake, exhaust... it still gets 24 mpg (down from 26 mpg) for my mixed driving commute. It is a great daily driver in my humble opinion, with the only exception being the times I need to carry more than one passenger. I just have to plan my days to drive the truck if I know there will be multiple folks to haul around. Like mentioned earlier, if you know you are going to put a lot of miles on it then look for a high mile stock C5. Then you won't kill the value too bad when you add another 30k per year.

I purchased a 98 Automatic a year ago to daily drive. I commute and drive a total of about 400 miles per week. The first thing I did was it the car tuned, which greatly improved the gas mileage and the shift points. The only other thing I've done is to get rid of the run flats. I average 25 mpg with it and wouldn't trade it for anything else. You don't have to have an M6 to get the mileage, you just need a good tuner!

Thanks for all the replys. I should be making my choice in another month or so... Its not out of the question to get a M6 but having never owned a manual, I don't think I want a vetter to be my learning machine, although my buddies say I wouldn't have a problem. At any rate we'll see what comes along, might just find that smoking deal...

i agree...i decided i was tired of playing around with my 02' mustang gt, so i bought a 00' black c5 coupe. i don't think i would ever go back, unless the mustang magically had an ls1 in it. kept em both for several months but i just sold the stang cuz it was just gathering dust in the yard
