Default oil pressure spike at cruise

did a search, seems like the common answer is "replace the sensor" but mine seems to be reading consistent, the HUD is displaying the same as the oil pressure gauge, which is saying the same as the little lcd below the speedo.. and it is consistent with throttle, which all has me worried.. i was cruising to town yesterday, 6th gear, 65 and looked down at my oil pressure gauge and it was at 75.. when i goose it a bit it will jump to 80, when i coast/idle it goes down to 60.. why all of a sudden would i have an oil pressure spike like this? partially collapsed oil filter, or is it just a bad sensor.. is there only one oil pressure sensor on an ls1? where is it? thanks!

sounds like your sending unit is GOING out. If you have checked your filter and all is good. It more than likely is the sending unit. Have it checked at a local shop. Have em lift the car and discon the oil filter and put on a pressure gauge to see what its actually doing. Had the same problem with mine. Infact it did the same thing yours did. 2 days later it spiked completely and stayed. When i had it placed on the pressure gauge it read 40-42 at idle(180 deg oil temp) and 50+ above 2k rpms. The sending unit is located at the back and under the intake. The stock part is made of brass and through much research, i have found its best to go with brass as a replacement. Places offer aluminium but i have heard too much negative feed back from its use. The only place i found a brass direct replacement is from O'reilys for around $40. Still working today

Yep. Sounds like a bad sending unit.

My mom's '01 6spd Vette does the same thing... the gauge, info center, and HUD are all pinned all the way. I'm sure it's the sending unit, but my question is does having a bad sending have any ill affects in-itself?

You should look into this relocation kit.

thanks ss.. sorry if im being dense, so it is under the intake manifold as in remove the entire manifold or it is on the block behind and below the manifold? i just would feel like an idiot if i removed the plastic valve cover covers, the breather tube and the manifold and then it was just below the plastic breather tube (also called "intake" by some folks) or if it was on the back of the block BEHIND the intake manifold haha.. thanks!!

Yes its under the manifold. Remove the manifold to see the sending unit at the back. I cant remember the size socket tho. I wanna say 19mm??? dont quote me on that tho.
