Cracked the block, new engine time!
Adam (SilveradoSS500) and I were giving my C5Z a shake down run after 9 months of repair work (trying to source a pre-04 complete C5 fuel system and make it work in a 2004).
On the 2nd lap, and being very lazy with the car, the genie got loose.
Low and behold the block is cracked from oil pan to cylinder head. I'll head up to the shop in the morning and try and snag some pictures.

That's a good question.
I'm gonna talk a few things over with the shop I use.
I think for "peace of mind" It's gonna be a LS3 vs LS2 vs LS1.
I can't get too excited by a lot of stuff out there no matter how cool because this engine saw about 4000 miles of track time on the low end and lots of misshifts. I realllllly abuse the engine, so I put special emphasis on durability going forward.

Update:
Rod through block. When The block gets removed we will disassemble the whole thing. I'm thinking that the bearings just got too worn.
What is going in:
LS7 with tweaked heads and a baby cam.

Scramblerman,
Just shoot me a pm or leave me visitor message and we can see about getting trackside.
VortechC5,
Ya, this is gonna be a whole new ballpark for me. Compared to the previous engine, this new one should have a whole lot more usable power.

Thanks for the compliment!
Engine is getting transplanted Monday/Tuesday Hoping to have it back and running by that weekend.
offtopic: unsure why this thread has the tag of "recall." Highly doubt my engine failure is related to any such thing haha
