Hello All,
I'm brand new to this forum and a new owner of a 2002 Z06. It has a whine coming from the rear, which the dealer is blaming on bad pinion bearings. How hard is it to rebuild these differentials? I understand that some special tools are needed for this? I looked around, and I can pick up some 3.90 gears for about $400, and I believe that Motive makes a bearing kit. How difficult would it be to do this myself? I'm quite handy mechanically, and am willing to purchase the needed tools. Is there any info out there on how to rebuild these things? Thanks.

Ughhhhhhhh good luck the tool set to rebuild the rear end is quite expensive. I seen one for sale once on corvette forum.

But keeping it real if you are just running around on the streets and not lauching the car you can find a built rear for a decent price. However if you are tracking/launching the car drag racing with a 6speed its only a matter of time. So more curious as to what your plans are with the car.

Thanks Mike. Those are indeed the tools. I've seen them on fleabay quite a few times, and the prices dont seem that bad. I think back in the day when people bought them new directly from Kent Moore, they paid serious money. I've seen them go for $100 sometimes.
As for the car, it's my summertime DD. One of my friends who drag races keeps trying to get me out to the track, but I simply can't afford to start breaking things on the regular.

He blew up his big ODR turbo car before we go to run. So then next best thing is his wifes turbo car. LMAO....
