What's the ring gear size on a C5?

What's the ring gear size on a C5? We know the fbod is a weak 7.625 inch ring gear but I've never seen a dimension posted on the C5...they don't seem to break as easily so it must be stronger.

Re: What's the ring gear size on a C5? Aha. I thought they were an oddball size. The only way to get a gear deeper than 3.42 is to buy the 3.73 Getrag setup. c4/c5, do you know why that is?
There is no way I will pay $1600 (best price I've seen lately) for 3.73's. Sucks. <img src="images/icons/frown.gif" border="0">

True. Motive is rumored to have 3.90 and 4.10s coming, but there is no part number, yet.

It was my understanding that the tools and data required to change the ring and pinion in a C5 Differential required a very expensive set of tools from Kent Moore and their instructions. Also, it was very very tedious. Someone fill me in on this. I would LOVE 4.10's!

yes. They require a special Kent Moore tool set. If you're interested in doing a swap, check out GM TSB #01-04-20-001. It lists procedures, required tools, data, and illustrations on setting up the Getrag C5 diff.

By the way, whenever your brother says something about his 4.10's, remind him how much better our rear diff is than the Fbody's. <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0"> <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0"> Ours can actually handle more than 375 ft/lbs! <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0">

I still kick his *** at the track, he don't have da' driving skill's his older bro has! <img src="images/icons/wink.gif" border="0"> But yes, he's always scared he's gonna break his rearend, us C5-er's don't have that problem (unless you hit ~550 ft/lbs ) <img src="images/icons/grin.gif" border="0">

When working with Getrag during training, they stated to us that the reason why they did NOT offer gears above and beyond the 3.73 was due to the fact that cutting that many teeth into the ring seriously degraded rated torque capacity.
Why that is might be due to the actual carrier design, which limits depth of the actual ring, so that there is not enought metal behind it to support the teeth.
Also, as a sidebar to this, GM recinded all instructions on overhaul of a c5 rear axle, due to the fact that side bearing preload could not be effectively duplicated. The reason being that there is a jig, by which actual side preload is measured. This jig costs GM about $1200 each, and felt that they did not want to pay that cost.
I really dont understand why, however, unless it is seal related, side covers, front inner and outer seals. We are told not to overhaul?????
I wish I knew why this was, however, in this service area, this is how GM stands.

According to the preliminary numbers in Motive's catalog (the ones I posted above) they wouldnt have any more teeth on the ring gear than the 3.42 or 3.73's. They would have to figure out a way to make a 10 tooth pinion gear.
I guess we'll just have to wait and see.
