Thumbs up Dragstrip results - 2005 Z51 M6

Last night we were blessed with some nice crisp air in Houston, so I headed back out to Houston Raceway Park and made about 20 passes. I got there when the gates opened and did laps for about an hour straight. My car is basically showroom stock with the exception of a 160F thermostat and some IAT temp/fan settings changed by MTI. Odometer clicked 5,000 miles last night, raceweight was 3385 lbs. The car is a 2005 Z51 coupe, 6-speed manual. Stock tires.

Best Runs:
60' = 2.01
1/4 = 12.54
mph = 113.24

60' = 2.02
1/4 = 12.59
mph = 113.01

60' = 2.12
1/4 = 12.63
mph = 113.45

I did so many passes in a row (about 15) that I finally started to get a feel for how to launch these cars on the runcrap tires. I tried all sorts of launch rpm and clutch release methods, but anything deemed "aggressive" would instantly light up the tires or cause massive wheel hop. Those spinning/hopping type launches were mostly from holding the rpm about 2500-3000 rpm and rolling into the throttle quickly. Typically causing 2.20-2.30 60' times. I found the best 60' times to come by leaving the line near idle rpm, and just smoothly rolling into the throttle. It would have minimal tire spin at the top of 1st, but nail the 2.0-2.1 60' times consistently. With a better set of tires, I could easily see some 1.8 short times. All shifts were at 6500 rpm, at redline. Rear tires were set at 23 psi hot (20 psi cold).

Hope this helps others that venture out to the drag strip in their Vettes.

Tony

nope. Just changed the potential timing retard that was based on IAT temps. Basically, allowing the engine to perform like it wants to.

Tony looks like our C6's are pretty well matched. Mine has had some computer work but nothing else.
60' 2.015
1/8 8.242
mph 88.91
1/4 12.65
mph 111.65
This was with a 30 mph head wind which I am sure hurt mph somewhat. It was at the Texas Muscle Car Club Challenge at Ennis (Texas Motorplex) Berometer was around 30 and temps were in the high 50's. Mine is also a Z51 6 spd but is Dsom, cashmere interior.

Parts on order or received:
LG Motorsports longtubes
Magnaflow offroad catback with X-pipe
Magna Charger supercharger
232/234 114 cam

I'd be happy with 10s in the 1/4, around 500-525 rwhp.

Better get ready to do something to the rear end as the 05 C6 is not as stout in that department as the C5. There has been quite a few rear ends broke on the run flats, mine included. I made 100's of runs in my 2002 Z28 6 spd and never broke anything on the street tires. Seems GM knew they had a problem as there are already changes on the trans housing and rear end housing on the 06. They had to know when the 05's were introduced or the fix would not already be in place for the 06. Another interesting thing is that everyone that I know that has broke one and took it to the dealer for warranty has not had a problem getting them to fix it. If mine breaks again I want the upgraded parts. This is also why our computer is so screwed up as it was a poor attempt to cover up the weak spots in our drive train.

They did not on mine, I told them that I saw on the net where they had already upgraded the 06 and I wanted the upgrade. You would have thought I asked to screw his sister, he informed me that the boards caused them a lot of trouble and you could not believe everything you read there. I told him I had enough since to sift through the bull **** and I could assure him there were upgrades in the 2006. The info came from tech hombre. So no upgrade for me. But when mine breaks again its not going to be so easy, I am going to raise some hell.

Yes, upgrading the 2005 rear to the improved 2006 requires more than just the center diff swap, the trans tail housing is involved as well, not a simple bolt in from what I understand and as of right now they are not doing that upgrade for 2005s under warranty as well.

Sounds with some heads and et streets or drag radials and a good tune when the software is available (and maybe 3.90 or 4.10 gears) that 10.9X time slip is a distinct reality!!

I haven't dynoed mine yet, but they typically put down 345-355 rwhp stock.
