Default C5 FRC vs. C5Z

Alright guys, I think I am going with a Corvette. I have considered the following...

E46 M3: Looks great, feels great but I think that the expensive maintenance, repairs will get annoying as will the paranoya of something expensive breaking like a rear dif ($3,700) or the subframe failure. I also take into consideration the lack of modability unless you boost it and I do not have the money for that...

EVO/STi: I love them both, but now they are that hot, slutty... fun HIGH school girlfriend... when what I want now is that gorgeous striking sexy woman to take out to dinner... that explains enough.

TT Supra: Still my dream, still out of budget...

So now it brings me to a C5 FRC, or a C5 ZO6... both are great cars but I am wondering if it'd be in my best interest to go with say a lower mileage, cheaper C5 FRC than it would be going with a zO6... What do you guys think? Here are a couple made up examples...

2000 FRC M6 38,000 miles for hmm $21,000 or something

or

2002 ZO6 with 57,000 miles for hmm $23,500...

What I am getting at is, I would probably feel as if I could enjoy the nice car I paid less for with less miles and what not... or will I regret not bucking up and just going big or going home with the ZO6? Does it offer that much more than a regular FRC if I can get the C5 FRC for 3-5,000 less with probably less miles?

The only down side to the zo6, (at least in my area) is the insurance company tacks on a premium due it being a zo6. I have an FRC, and they never asked about any of my mods, but grilled the **** out of me to make sure it wasn't a zo6. Only concerned about the premium. LOL> Either way you go, you will have a great car.

I just bought a C5 and now i regret not getting a Z06. If your gonna do it then shoot for the best. Like stated above if you plan to get crazy with the mods then get the FRC but if you plan to keep it mild ZO6 all day.

In Jan-March 07 I was in a similar position, looking for a replacement daily driver. Since my commute is 100 miles per day, I wanted a car that had already depreciated as much as possible. For me, that ruled out a Z06. After 3 months, I found a '99 FRC with 115k miles for $15,500. It was in very nice condition, and totally stock except for an exhaust plate & front screens. A year later, I have added $2k worth of cam, exhaust, intake, tires, and it is up to 141k miles. It has met my needs very well with 26 mpg commute and 7.7 second ET in the 1/8 mile. So like others have said, if you are going to swap heads/cam you might as well go with an FRC. If you mainly are wanting the looks, get the Z06.

One note on gas mileage. They can be very good on gas bro. Add an asp UD pully and Meziere EWP and watch your gas mileage go 30+ actual on the highway. My best actual gas mileage (even at my power level) was 34.5 mpg and had 600 miles on the trip meter. On a side note that was coming back from Texas, all highway, never even touched the brakes more then once or twice. Had the cruise set the entire time. Without the perfect conditions and your stock setup you should have no problem getting good gas mileage out of an FRC.

Just make sure you can afford it... They get great gas mileage, but if you're questioning the extra insurance expense then it may not be for you.

I have an 02 Z06, and like allngn_c5, I get 30+ mpg on the highway. In town it see's anywhere from 15 to 18mpg. Its a great car, but I can't say enough make sure you can afford it, there is the vette tax!

i would base it on the difference of engine and suspension.
ls6>ls1. so thats a better platform to mod upon. if i were wanting to go stroker or FI or TT, then i'd get a cheaper FRC and slap some coilovers and a built 402 with a D1SC on there.
if i didnt want to dump alot of money into it, i'd get a z06 with H/C/I/E and thats still a super stout car.

insurance is not that bad if you have a clean record... i pay 89 a month for full coverage on a 03 Z06.... im 24 and have great coverage.

bottom line the Z06 will be better in every way... It will hold its value, starts with a better suspension, better transmission/gearing, better engine, and of course you can say you have a Z06... I love that ...

- just bolt ons go Z06.. Not to mention weight savings and wheels are better, but I think you said you will go with aftermarket wheels anyway

GO Z06

24 yrs old FULL COVERAGE for 89 a month on an 03 zo6. How's that sir ?? I have multi car and multi policy discounts and a perfect record. I am curious how you pay so little for insurance. I pay 130 a month through ALLSTATE and they are the cheapest after calling 40 different insurers. I am also soon to be 33 yrs old. Is the car in your name, or your moms/dads ??

SC must have better rates for younger drivers. Glad you are saving a bit of change on your premiums.

I only pay 227$ a month, and it's going to drop to about 198$ a month when I turn 21. Considering I have a brand new Corvette, and my monthly's only 490. Totalled up, I pay roughly 8680$ a year for my dream car, at age 20. Considering I only make 33k a year, I don't think I'm doing too badly.
