Default Pro's and Con's on the 97-04 Z06 Corvettes

What are the weakspots on these. I will be getting one within the next month so I wanted to get spun up on possible problems...

If its standard make sure all the gears shift nice 3rd to 4th blocker rings are a common problem. 97 to 99 lifter design tend to be weak. Keep away from a car with HUD codes that will be expensive. Besides that just evaluate it like a normal car compression test and stuff.

C5 Z06 was only made from '01 to '04 and then the C6Z from '06 to now. The '01 was rated at 385HP/385TQ and the '02-'04 was 405HP/400TQ due to a higher lift cam, lighter valves, and deletion of a converter in the exhaust. Some (not all) '01 C5Zs had oil consumption issues. Also some '02s had valve spring failures as well.

You asked about C5 Zo6's

They were only made between 01~04

There is no downside... compared to an F-body they are perfect.

lol ill have to agree....considering ive had both....i will say this 02-04 dyno much better than the 01's for reasons stated above. 02-04's seem to dyno around 340-360rwhp and ive seen better than that......01's are around 325-340rwhp

EBCM, Column Lock, aluminum shift forks in 01-mid 03, 04 gas tank seperation (filler neck), generally all of the problems that the C5's have; although I have really enjoyed my experience as a C5 Z06 owner!

well i hope sombody can inform you better than i can....it all depends on your plans for the car...launching at the track with IRS is alittle more difficult then a solid rear....plus if u plan on adding serious power, you might as well plan on changin over to a solid rear. There is alot more info than this. im just not that familiar with IRS myself yet.

I've heard that is a main problem, and the stock battery leaks onto electrical wiring

The HUD is standard on '02-'04 Z06 and I think it was an option on the '01 but I could be wrong. And no it doesn't have a g-meter.

01-385hp, 02/03/04-405hp
1. column lock, easy fix. My car had a new one installed from the dealer.
2. CAGS on these cars too!
3. Battery leakage issue-new battery
4. Needs stickier tires than the stockers on it. Tires will not hook in 1st or 2nd with the F1's. Nitto's or M/t et streets are what you need to run.

not alot of problems otherwise.

after adding more power to car get a DTE trans brace for sure. Also eventually harden output shafts for the rear end. If you break the stockers, more than likely the rear end case is gone too. Lots of guys have this and cut 1.5 if not better 60' times with the stock IRS.

Be ready to pay the vette tax on everything. Try and pick up the same parts for cheaper on ebay, the for sale part of this forum or go to the corvetteforum.

HUD was standard on the 02-04 Z06's, not available for the 01 Z06

2002-2004 C5s had updated computers and mafs. They are easier to tune and have LS6 blocks. I have an 02 and have had no problems even on stock tranny and output shafts with 450rwhp.
