Look up stalled videos on YouTube so you can get an idea

No I haven't.. I've been majorly into dirt track racing for many years (build and race my own engines) but just recently started messing with the strip.. I've built and helped people with a few LS swaps so I know a little about that aspect but I have no idea what's going on when it comes to getting down the strip. I'll be the first one to admit it haha!

With my FTI 4k lockup stall in heavy traffic the stall would have the rpms in the 2.5-3.0k range until my lockup kicked in about 45 mph or 50 then the rpms would drop significantly

So any time under that mph my converter would be unlocked letting the converter slip until I reach that mph or I punch it and it jumps straight to 4k and I'm gone lol

I'm not so good at explaining things but I hope this helps

Yeah the stall videos show exactly what I'm looking for.. I definitely want a lockup converter but I wasn't aware that the one I listed was not one.. Another concern is the tune.. I just had a street tune done locally so I could drive it around for awhile.. How much needs adjusted with the tune?

You will probably just need shift points adjusted maybe rev limiter raised.

Whats those currently set at ?

Rev limiter is at 6200, but I'm not sure about the shift points.. I would have to check on that

Edit: How about the ESRL8082 from FTI?

That's a great price but the ESRL8082 is $389 and is a lockup 3800-4000 stall brand new.. Wouldn't that be a better choice?

A stall converter will help a lot, since you have a cam, I had a friend with a 5.3 mustang sns stage 2 and in a stock converter it would barley get out of its own way (60ft) my bone stock 5.3/th350 with a 3500 stall went 8.20@87 in 1985 s10, I just bought the truck back and put a stock 5.3 with a stock stall 4l60e back in it, I hope to get it to the track soon, thinking about stick some gas on it to get it out of the hole

My stock fuel injected ls1 stalled 4l60e on motor (3.08) silver mustang vs my friend orange sns stage 2 cammed 5.3 th350 stock stall, carb (3:73) if I remember right he trap 89 and I trap 90-91

Haha I thought $389 looked real good for that converter! Hopefully I can't contact my tuner and maybe he'll do a quick touch up for the converter at a discounted price since I just had him do the tune not even a month ago...

^^ that video is insane! That thing leaves like crazy for a stock ls1... I hope it makes that much of a difference for me!!

I would call FTI and just make sure that will work with your setup. just to be certain before you make the plunge

I took my truck to the track, first pass 8.50@83, second pass sprayed a 75 shot transmission slip 2-3rd but went a 8.13@81, third pass 8.16@81, let the truck cool down sprayed the truck off idle to 60ft went a 8.0@85, repeated the last pass but went a 7.98@84 1.74 60ft, made two more 8.0 at 81 pass slipping bad, all and all I am happy, a converter and a transmission I believe the truck will go a 7.9x easily

So FINALLY I got the converter ordered from FTI and it should be in the mail soon..

After install, will I need a tune immediately? It's a 3800-4000 stall. I plan to get a tune in the near future but was wondering if I could drive it without one right away? Will I hurt anything?

Thanks guys

Good choice on the FTI converter. I've had 2 from them. a 3800 in my bolt-on LS1 Camaro and a 3500 in my twin turbo C5. Both performed great.

Get a solid pinion spacer for the rear. The stock crush spacer will deflect on a hard launch causing pinion depth to change and grenade everything else. Its a cheap ($20)and easy mod to help the 7.5" 10 bolt live longer. You may also look at Girdle covers, ~$150 for some added insurance. I like the Detroit true-trac for the 10-bolt if you're having any traction issues.

I built a 5.3 swapped 2000 S10 extreme years ago and it was a fun little truck. I just had a stock 5.3 with headers and LS1 intake, it was good for high 13's around 102. I kept the stock stall and I could tell it was holding it back along with the 3.42 gears.

You're ok to drive easy with the new stall untuned. Just don't go WOT, it might bounce off the rev limiter causing shock loads to the drivetrain. Follow Greg's break-in procedure and everything should be ok.
