New Cam Only Record of 10.510 @ 125.8 MPH!
We were coming to Houston to pick up a Trans Am rolling chassis, so we figured it was a great time to try for a new cam-only record. Our '98 Z28 already had the solid-roller engine out of it, so we literally pieced together a used short-block from parts out of our corner parts bin. The engine consists of our MS3 camshaft (237/242, .603"/.609", 113 LSA), completely stock 241 casting LS1 heads, Precision Race Components dual valve spring kit, and a set of TSP hardened pushrods. Other than that, everything else internally was stock.
On our first pass, the weather seemed like it was going to be pretty decent. The DA was hovering just under -500', so we were anxious for a pass. I pull through the water, do my burnout, and pull into the beams. The poor Supra next to me had no idea. The tree drops, and the ride begins. I never expected it to pull the wheels as hard as it did! She pulls the wheels waist-high and carries them out 40-50'. I push her into second and keep thinking this should be a decent pass, even if I did short-shift the 1-2! I pull up to the ET booth and fumble to see the ET. It shows a 10.518 @ 125.6 MPH with a 1.38 60'! We were totally pumped to see the ET and 60' and had HIGH hopes of better ET's later on in the night.
Before the second pass, I tightened up the suspension a little bit. The landing was a little too soft after pulling the wheels on the first pass. This pass we were lined up against a 427 cid LS1. We both pull to the line, and the 427 Camaro redlights against my .029 RT. The car initially hooks but unloads the suspension and brings the nose back down. It netted a 1.43 60' and clicked off a 10.510 @ 125.8 MPH! I wasn't happy with the lack of traction, thanks to the million and one street cars, but it was cool to see it spin and run .008 quicker.
The last pass wasn't worth anything as the car spun again with a 1.44 60'. It was late in the night, and they gave up on prepping the track. It was pretty disappointing. We were hoping to see our 1.38 60' again, but the track wouldn't allow for it.
The car has a 200-4R transmission with a TCI Competition 4500 RPM lock-up stall, Moser 12-bolt with 4.56:1 gearing, 28x10x15 Hoosier slicks, and a raceweight of 3,175 lb. with me in it.
Hopefully we'll have another chance before spring rolls around to better the ET. We thought it was pretty good for a piece-together engine built from a pile of used parts.

Had a good time, I was looking for some of that "Good" Houston air, but apparantly we missed it by a week or so. Still ran a better time than I thought we would though even without the great air. Nice meeting everyone from the LS1Tech that I found. Met up with Jrod in the staging lanes and got to chat with him for a little while and someone with a Silver Z28 (forgot name) but he did a huge wheelie and came down hard and messed up his headers and oil pan.

Wow! I guess I've always thought of the cam only thing to be for individual car owners. Kind of a "little guy" type of competition. I never really expected a shop to drop a cam only motor in their race car. I'm not knocking you guys for doing it, just suprises me. Congrats on the record

Awesome results guys! I have this cam in my hands but for some reason I'm afraid to install it-something keeps telling me it won't be streetable? Does the cam have any advance ground into it? Or could I install it advanced to lower the powerband a bit? Sorry if this is off topic but I'm pulling my hair out trying to figure out which cam to run!

I remember 2 years ago when RAGEman went 11.10's cam only and people found that hard to believe. We've come a long way since then. I wonder how quick the cam only cars will become in another 2 years...

Rodney- don't Cry 'shop car'.
In all fairness, you had 3 mph on him.
Could you guys post your entire timeslips(or just the numbers, don't need the actual slips)
How did you guys go 10.518@125.6(1.38)
then run 10.510@125.8 (1.43)?(spinning, not 60' with the rear tires)?
could you post the slips on these 2 runs?
