Smile Race Report: Open Comp & Quick 8 race #3

I'm off the races again. Florida summertime = mid 90s for temps, and track surface temps of 128 degrees for starters. I drove the Nova out for some Quick 8 street and Open Comp racing (5-tenths pro-tree).

After my 2 time runs, I ended up with a 11.74 index, which I thought should work well for close to 3000 DA conditions and a somewhat slippery track.

1st round Quick 8 street: I run the guy who went red against me last Quick 8 final, and coming off a .010 light I didn't want to go red. So: his .051 to my .054, I catch him at 1200 feet and get the stripe by 37 thousandths, my 11.777 @ 100.89 mph (11.74 index) to his 13.987 @ 99.45 mph on 13.90 index.

Finals against a 15.77 index'd '84 Olds Cutlass with a good driver at the helm. My .051 to his .069 light, I think I'm getting there and jamb on the brakes to go 11.751 @ 97.53 mph to his 15.779 @ 85.77 mph. Stripe and margin of victory: 6 thousandths of a second!

Round 1 Open Comp - I get paired with a 12.20 index'd El Camino. His .167 light to my .066 bulb, I catch him and scrub down the stripe to 34 thousandths and win, 11.784 @ 106.81 mph to his 12.277 @ 109.11 mph.

Round 2 I get the guy that finished 2nd to me in points in 2004 and 3rd in '05, running a 11.86 index'd 64 Chevy II. His .022 light to my .028 bulb. My car had been spinning all day, but this one was bad! So I waited until the 1-2 shift and knew I wasn't going to catch him, so I grabbed the bottle and tried to make the stripe and close as I could.
The result: his 11.843 @ 108.18 mph to my 11.596 @ 108.85 mph. He admitted afterwards that he fed me the stripe as I tried to keep it close (got there first by 21 thousandths)!

So I was done after round 2, and I'm in 2nd place in points, 1 round out of the lead.

Stuck around and decided to try out the spray for an entire pass. Track was still iffy, so I footbrake launched this one. But as I left, the car was spinning again so I waited a hair before jumping on the button. She felt good and was pulling strong!

1.553 - 60 foot
6.791 - 1/8 mile
102.11 - 1/8 mile mph
8.879 - 1000 foot
10.663 @ 125.78 mph - 1/4 mile

Air was 2145 feet last night. For comparison sake my best nitrous pass of 10.501 @ 126.49 mph with a 1.460 60 foot was in February air with a 651 DA.
So this Magnaflow exhaust is definately helping! I think 10.40s could happen with some good DA at the end of the year.

Hope everyone had a good weekend, post up your results!

Congrats on the winnings. Hot weather sucks. Our track was closed this weekend - which was OK because it was 103 outside. Last weekend the air temp was 96, track 142. Only got one OK pass - 9.78 at 140. I feel for your traction.

Good luck. Another track championship coming your way

10.05 is real cool Derek. Good to hear you got some racin in this weekend. I made it down to 8 cars. Won my entry back so it wasn't to bad. My car ran 10.30's all weekend in the Texas summertime 100 degree heat.
