Default My 1/4mi times, very confused w/my runs...

Ok guys, it finally happened, i took her to the track at KCIR this past Friday, 07.06.07 and ran 4 times. i only have 3 time slips since they lost my 2nd run time slip. below is the breakdown of my runs and i would like to know what is the deal with my insane trap speeds (cept for my last run in which i missed 4th gear since my pedal was on the floor. if anyone would like to see my time slips as proof, i will take pics and post them up. Numbers in bold are the best numbers of the night for each catagory respectively:

KCIR - Kansas City International Raceway (KCMO)

Outside Temp: 96°
Track Temp: 130°+
Humidity: 60%+

1st Run: Raced and beat a new '07 Mustang GT vert...

Tire Pressure: 28psi

R/T: .534
60': 2.331
330': 5.883
1/8: 8.667
MPH: 88.64
1000': 11.026
1/4: 13.011
MPH: 113.78

2nd Run: No timeslip

3rd Run: Raced and beat a '06 ?????...

Tire Pressure: 28psi

R/T: .270
60': 2.205
330': 5.786
1/8: 8.596
MPH: 87.89
1000': 10.977
1/4: 12.976
MPH: 112.96

4th Run: Raced and got my *** kicked by a big-block El Camino...

Tire Pressure: 24psi

R/T: .372
60': 2.191
330': 5.750
1/8: 8.527
MPH: 88.71
1000': 10.889
1/4: 12.916
MPH: 106.34
**Missed 4th gear since clutch was stuck to the floor, and would have been even quicker than 12.9 had i had 4th gear...

so can anyone explain to me why i am trapping so high, and suggestions on what i need to improve to get my ET's down other than just telling me i need to lower my 60' time (that's a given). also, with traps that high what would an 'ideal' 1/4mi time be...?

i have the stock rear end and stock 3:42 gearing. im running Nitto DR's 315/35/17 and hooking like mad. i was launching between 2500-3000rpm and bogged every launch. after it recovered, she was off like a bullet pulling hard in every gear, esp. 3rd...

as for race weight, stock '00 SS, with 1/2 tank of gas...

i hear you about the practice, haha. my dad said the samething about practice and getting some gears, esp after seeing my trap speeds.

i want to max out my car as she sits now, before going to a 12 bolt or 9" with gears...

I hate to say it, but you've already mentioned what is an area to work on: 60 foot times.

A 2.19 60 foot isn't hooking, it's bogging. That's a too low rpm launch rpm in my opinion, and I'm not even stick driver (not trying to be critical, but you can do much better here). Something better than 2.00 will be a start for hooking your power. If the clutch will hold it, I'd say you should be able to get the car into the 1.8 or better 60 foot times with traction. With that MPH, mid 12s should happen with a 1.9 or better 60 foot. If you can hook with a 1.8 or better 60 foot, drop another tenth or two off the time. Cool fall/winter air could net you high 11s if everything goes right during a run. FWIW, my best pass with my mostly stock Formula is 12.92 at 106 mph with a 1.93 60 foot times, so that gives you an idea of what a good hooking 60 foot time will give you for the set-up.

Practice and trying new techniques to find what works the best is the key. Keep at it and have fun!

If you are launching and its bogging AND cutting 2.2-2.3 60fts then that means the car is falling on its face so hard that it is taking a while to recover. I suggest to lower the tire pressure around 15-18psi and try launching higher. You should be able to cut a sub 2.0 60ft easy. Typically the higher the 60ft the higher the trap speed. But I think with 113mph you can probably get low 12's like 12.2-12.4. -Mark

Do you have a stock diaphram type clutch? If your missing gears on a regular basis you have a definate clutch problem. A diaphram clutch, when introduced to high RPM, will go over center and suck itself into the floor. It then disengauges the engine from the drivetrain. If you lift off of the throttle while going from gear to gear it won't happen and you'll find everything will go as planned. You could get an aftermarket clutch and flywheel and cure the problem. A good steel flywheel is the best investment you can make as it will save your legs and car by not risking blowing up like a factory one eventually will. I have an old '67 Chevelle that has a 375-396 and it suffered from the over centering problem untill i figured it out.

If he has a good drag radial lowering the pressure might hurt the leave instead of help it. Getting the tires the right temp in the burnout will probably help though. Get that stock flywheel out of there first though. You can't possibly envision the damage an exploding flywheel can cause. A friend of mine lost an engine, transmission, shifter, dristributor, set of headers and a driveshaft because of a cast iron flywheel that blew up.

As others said improve your 60's and chances are the mph will go down as well as the ET. I wouldnt even worry about the MPH, that only matters on supraforums :p
