Default First time out in my new 98 Formula

I went to the opening day today after owning my car for only 1 week. Car is a 1998 Firebird Formumla 6 speed.

Mods:
Hooker LTs, ory, Flowmaster CB
Fast Intake, SLP Cold air
Hot Cam
360whp
Edelbrock sub frame connectors
KYB adj. fr. Struts
Eibach spring kit
Airlift drag bags
Edelbrock torque arm
Centerforce Billet sfi flywheel Pressure plate dfx disc new t.o. brg
Ram adj. clutch m.c.
Moser eng.12 bolt rear end 4.11 gears
Eaton posi 33 spl. Axles c-clip elim. Kit1350 series u joint Moser alum. Girdle cover
Random technology lwr. Control arms & relocation brkts.
Edelbrock strut tower brace
Edelbrock adj. panhard bar

I was useing BFG 255/50 16 drag radial and it was about 70 degrees today.

First pass, 20psi in the DRs, after the run we checked and they were 23(probably went up due to heat?). Did first gear burn out let them smoke for about 3 seconds or so. Revved to 2500, and pretty much dropped the clutch. spun like a bitch all through first and most of 2nd, shifted the next two times at 6400 Time:

60ft: 2.45
1/8: 9.863
mph: 82.826
1/4: 14.795
mph: 95.131

Second pass, 17psi in DRs. 2nd gear burn out for about 5 seconds or so. Launched just like I do on the road similar to the way I do on the street just more aggressive, shifted at 6400. Tims:

60 ft: 2.319
1/8: 8.794
mph: 87.326
1/4: 13.253
mph: 111.898

The next 2 runs were pretty similar mids 13s, my launchs werent that great bogged really bad 2.40s 60 fts.

5th run was pretty similar to second one.

6th run, I decided I was going to get a little more aggressive. 16 psi in DRs, longer burnout Im guessing 8 seconds or so. Dumped the clutch from about 2300-2400. Shifted at 6000. Time:

60 ft: 2.131
1/8: 8.547
mph: 87.414
1/4: 12.995
mph: 112.032

I was pretty happy, made my goal. Now just to get it down a little lower, Im thinking I could do mid 12s. Last run I had some motivation to do good. I was racing a new body style Boss Mustang. The rest of the day I had a bunch of ricers and blew their doors off by about 5 seconds or more.

Any suggestions?

Lookin good! With the rear that you have you should be able to drop that 60 down with some practice and you will shave some time off.

You should get into the 12.6's with a better 60, might need drag shocks front and back if the budget allows. I'd experiment with shift points, might have more in it too. 112mph sounds good but I think you can go faster.

Should have enough for mid to low 12s with a good 1.7 or better 60 foot time. I'd step up to a set of bias-ply tires or if you want to keep running a drag radial try the M/T ET Street. Keep making runs, have fun and you'll learn what the car likes and get better times.

The airbags were more popular 6-7 years ago before we had drag shocks. You can pump them up so that the rear is stiffer. With a stick car you may want to have the rears somewhat stiff so that the car won't wheelhop. But front drag shocks will help a ton though I would do all four.

I see. That explains it, since the suspension stuff was done by the first owner(3 years at least). I will try useing these for now, then change them out later if I choose to do more drag racing.

Thanks for the tips.

If you get wheel hop add more air, and some folks ran more air on the passenger side due to the physics of how the rearend torques up.

BLK85... Didn't see ya there. A lot of cars.. We were buzzzzy working out some of our initial weekend problems. Nice runs by the way.. Got in a few runs before the tranny dipstick (I know, I know) ended our day.

Going out this weekend? Stop by our pits, see if we can help if need be. We should be ready to roll again by Saturday.

I was out across from the creak. I didnt want to take anyones spot even though it was "dead" compared to a normal weekend. I saw a few of your passes, didnt look to bad. I heard about your little mishap, as I was putting the tires back on.

Nope Im not going this weekend. Looks like it may be kind of rainy anyway. Im going to most like be heading to Jerrys Chevy for the Corvette ride and drive.

Im thinking the next time I go out there will be the opening Sunday and just entering Super Trophy so I can get at least 5 passes or so. Im not sure yet. I will make sure to stop by your pits next time Im out there. I didnt want to stop by Saturday since it looked like you guys were busy.

Ill see ya out there later this year.

Get a good slick and possibly a skinny so it doesnt sway im sure ud be fine with radials up front but some people dont like the sway with a bias ply out back and a big radial up front and do a good burnout and launch it hard once you get that 60ft down u should be in the lower 12's.
