First Time in the Stock Formula, Advice?
Ok. Last night was my very first time taking this car to the track. The car is completely stock, down to a paper air filter. I took along my buddy's bf goodfrich comp t/a dr's to try, but not at first. My first two passes were on street tires. I did not remove the tire and jack, I left everything, including the floor mats in. 1/4 Tank of gas.
First pass: Went AROUND the water box.Quick clean off of the tires, staged and brake stalled to about ~1800 rpms. That was about as high as I could go since the tires were almost starting to spin. On the third yellow, I let off of the brake, but didn't give it any gas. It immediately lit up the tires.

1000:11.799
1/4:13.986
mph:103.38
So after that I went right back into the staging lanes to try again.
Second pass: Cleaned off the tires (after going AROUND the water box), but this time when I staged I only stalled to about ~1,000 rpms. On the third yellow, I let off of the brake slower, and very slowly rolled into the gas. This launch was way too careful, because I didn't get any wheelspin.

I honestly think that if I would've kept working with the street tires, I could've eventually worked it down to a 2.0 60'. However, I knew I wasn't going to get very many runs in, and wanted to try out the DR's, so I put them on next.
3rd Pass: Went through the water box, did a short ~5sec or so burnout and then staged. Brake stalled to about ~1500 rpms, let off the brake and rolled into the throttle, and the car completely BOGGED down and fell on it's face! Eventually is started accelerating again and I finished the pass:

4th Pass: Since the last pass I bogged, I thought I would try launching as hard as I could. Quick burnout, staged and brake stalled to 2000 rpms, and just hammered it on the third yellow. The car completely bogged again, this time worse! It took it longer to recover this time.

1000:11.654

Last pass: This time I decided to not stall, since it wasn't working with the stock converter. I did a nice good burnout, and staged at idle. On the third yellow, I just stabbed the throttle, flashing the converter. This time the car didn't seem to bog.

It's interesting that I was noticeably slower with the dr's. They're a taller tire, so maybe that's why. Also, I'm not sure how to start the mods. I was considering just putting some mickey thompson et street radials on my stock wheels, so that I'll always have them and won't have to borrow these. But if I do that, I really need to get a stall because the car just falls on it's face. If I don't do the et street's and I leave street tires on, then the car will just be harder and harder to launch as I add power. So here's what I was thinking from here:
Lid, filter, free ram air
Ported TB with bypass
Tune (buddy has hp tuners)
MT ET street radials
Torque converter (Yank 3600?)
Then after that I'll do LT's, and a cat-back, etc. Sorry for the long post. Any advice?

sounds like our car when we got it 5 months ago, street tires spun,dr bogged.keep in mind i have 2.73.after trying different methods,my best and consistent runs go like this with 275/40/17mt dr.I go around waterbox,no clean off or anything, stage at idle and hammer the go pedal on the third yellow.nets me 2.0' everytime.I know its time for a stall now.
your mod list looks good too.
remove your front swaybar, lighten up the dumdumdumdumdum, and it will move out better.
sorry for the long repost.

I have had the same expierence with stalling up the stock converter. Simply don't do it!
01' z28 Lid, Catback, DR's, 2.73; stalling at 1500:
2.1 60ft
8.9 1/8
84.8 MPH
Same mods; left off idle:

8.7 1/8
86.7 MPH

That about right for the car and mods. My 3.23 geared Formula ran 13.47 at 103 mph with a 2.06 60 foot bone stock. With the mods now (MAC mids, off road Y, Magnaflow catback, LS6 intake, lid, ported MAF ends and MSD wires), and a tune set-up for safe on either motor or spray, and she's run high 12s at 109 mph on 2.00 60 foots on M/T sportsman pros. As mentioned, the converter will give you best bang, but remember the tranny might not last long without a good trans cooler (and some won't handle the load past a year or two).
Keep at it and have fun while making the laps!

Thanks for the reply's. For now, I'm holding off on the converter. I want to pick out which cam I'll be doing in the future, so I need to research more. I'm looking at doing a lid, ported tb, lt's, and a cat-back. Possibly a FTRA, underdrive pulley, and a used SLP 85 mm maff with a tune since most of those are relatively inexpensive. I'll do a converter down the road.
