Took 15 lbs out of the stock carpet
I had to pull the carpet out when I installed the 6 point roll bar in the car. I decided to see if I could get a little weight out of it while I had some spare time on my hands. I slowly did this over time since my car is currently not moving under its own power. I figured that this was a good alternative to spending more money on "light weight" carpet. I've heard some stories where putting in light weight carpet either created a pain with fitment issues or quality of carpet over time. (Not to say that's always the case b/c I've seen people that have had great success with swapping out the carpet also). I just figured I would post this as another way to go if you're on a budget and don't mind putting in the time.
When I first pulled the carpet out...
Then I started scraping all the sound deadening material off. I took a razor and cut as close to the carpet as I could as I slowly pulled the material off. As you can see, in some areas there is actually more then one layer. (My dog layed down on the carpet so I couldn't resist taking the picture)
After I got the majority of everything off I weighed it. I weighed it multiple times by different means and each time it came out to 13 lbs.
However, there was still a lot of material that was glued to the carpet.
This is where I got out my trusty little belt sander. Nothing special.
I didn't try to do this all in one sitting. (Not to say that you can't) I took my time and when I got tired of messing with it, I just pulled it back into the garage and waited until I had more spare time. I actually thought I took more pictures of the different phases, but apparently not. These will have to do.
After spending a while sanding with the belt sander I switched to a little hand sander that worked better for getting into tight spaces. At times, the belt sander was covering too much surface area. There's no way I would have tried the whole carpet with just the hand sander though.
All in all, I probably got out about another 3 lbs of material between the sound deadening stuff and the bottom side of the carpet that I sanded. But, to be conservative I rounded down to 2 lbs. It looks much better now.
Hope this helps someone else.

where you store the t tops, down in there. theres a "rubber" like mat
i guess your putting the rear seats back in to? if not take out the rear seat belts.
also i removed as much of the firewall rubber mat as well too. thats quite heavy. i only cut what i could reach w/ a knife. if you take the dash out theres more but im not gonna go that far lol
