Default Any difference in 50 lbs of rear axle weight vs 50 lbs of car weight?

This might be a stupid question but I just swapped to a 9" that weighed 60 lbs more than the 10 bolt. It feels like to me traction is better with this rear even with the 3.70 gears and the car seems planted better (more direct weight on the tires?). So is the extra 60 lbs going to the tires a better weight than say 60 more lbs inside the car? I save 15 lbs on the TA/Crossmember. Just curious thoughts on this.

Where it's at is much more important than total weight. I took a bunch of weight off the car and it helped a lot.
I added weight to the back bumper area & it flew. Rotating, sprung, un-sprung, before pivot point,
after pivot point all makes a huge difference. 10 lbs is definitely not just 10 lbs in drag racing!!

Good luck.

I was really worried about the additional weight but I think it is a good thing if you can believe that. The TA/Crossmember are forward so it got lighter up there. It just transfers and plants better from my butt-o-meter.

Exactly. Like I said, I spent big money taking a bunch of weight off.
After I added it back I ran faster, but I put it where it was needed.
Trust me, it really ticks you off after all the work & money, to run faster at 3200#, than 3000#.
Your butt & 60' clock, never lie!! Good luck.

as long as your car is working, thats all that matters. but it is better to have weight in the car rather than the rear end or so. unsprung weight is weight you can not control. sprung weight you can use for weight transfer. thats why people go as far as even mounting coilovers upside down to put the weight of the shock body above the spring and not have it as unsprung weight.

Id rather have the weight be in the rear, then on the nose. If that makes sense.

Rotating weight & un-sprung weight are your enemies. Obviously in this case,
being so far back, it still helped a little.

As I mentioned, I took a bunch of weight off, mostly middle forward.
It did help a lot, but when I put 200 lbs on the back bumper. It helped tremendously.
The car pivoted much much better, it started planting & holding. Instead of planting & slamming down.

Now the red car is a totally different animal. You can't just say take weight off the nose like most other cars.
The general rule of thumb is still, less rotating & un-sprung weight the better.
Move the sprung weight behind the pivot point as much as possible.

Good luck.

I can't wait to hit the track because I know it helped me.
