Question Rear seat pan removal?

Has anyone ever cut the pan out of the floor under the rear seats and finished it with sheet metal. If so how much did they weigh.

I cut mine out for more clearance for the mufflers. I didn't weigh them but, I don't think it would be worth the effort just for weight reduction. It does make the rear seat area look nice if you are going to carpet it anyway.

Muffler clearance and cleaner look back there are also my reasons for wanting to do it. I will weigh them when I cut them out next sat.

Don't know I'll weigh them when I cut them out. If I had to guess I would say 10 lbs per side.

I did this mod but I didn't do it for weight. I did it because I lowered my car and the torque arm mounting bracket at the axle was hitting the underside of the car. So I cut all that out and while I was at it, I cut out the seat buckets (as much as I could without cutting the frame) to make it look better and make carpet installation much easer and cleaner.

LSmonster, I love the way yours turned out. I wanted to do this on mine last year (for exactly the same reasons as you) but I figured I should wait until I put mini tubs in (ordering next week ). What kind of metal (thickness, etc) did you use to fill back in?

Thanks, Skinny... And 18 gage S/M works great. But do NOT cut any of the frame rails out... You will see where they run under the car. Just cut along side those then box it in back in to the metal you put in the floor area.

I was under my car this weekend and realized I could only cut about half of the seat pan out because of the Frame rail running under them. I may leave mine alone for now.

Just doing the passenger side because 1. ditching the duals and want to put a single muffler there, 2. fuel/brake lines are in the way of the driver side

Flat aluminum plate will finish off both sides of the rear seat area.

^^^that's exactly how I cut mine out, I'll try and get some pics up tonight sometime.
How are you going to finish that with aluminum?
I had to make a 2 piece plate, I used 22ga sheet metal, spot welded it and I'm going to use seam sealer and paint it to finish it up.

^^ I made templates out of cardboard. They will be flat 1/8" aluminum plate covering the top of each bucket. I am using the same method I did when I cut out my trunk - 3M windshield urethane to hold them in place.

The main reason for this project was for muffler/resonator clearance and ease/aesthetic appearance of carpet install.

Ohh yeah, I remember the trunk with the aluminum, that was cool.
So basically your're just gonna cover the area and some of the area that used to be inside the car will now be exposed outside from underneath.
BTW, the metal I cut out didn't weight much at all and I put it right back with the 22ga sheetmetal.
I did it for muffler clearance as well.
