Default Strange 12 bolt does not spin freely?

I posted this in the gears an axle section and thought I might get an answer here faster.

I have a strange 12 bolt and I noticed with it up on jack stands that you can't spin the tires freely. I pulled the brakes off and unhooked the drive shaft. The rear end is really stiff. I would think with everything off of it the things would spin freely. It takes both hands to turn it a little at a time. Does anyone know what kind of pre-load I should have on this thing. Or how hard is yours to spin.

If you can turn it by the pinion yoke in either direction without a lot of effort you are probably ok. Turning the pinion by the ring gear is a little harder to do.

Been to Fay-Nam quite a few times with the truck! Wish it wasn't going to rain tomorrow so I could run the Camaro some. Itching to try out a new converter.
