Default hex vs splined quick release wheel

fabbing up the entire steering system and was woundering if anybody is using the hex style quick release steering hub. Only thing i can think is it might have more play in it vs a splined hub. Kinda like a poorly fitting socket on a bolt head.
Hex hubs are a good bit cheaper then splined so i figured id ask.

I was also woundering if people were using an actual flange seal where the coloumn goes through the firewall or just drilling and welding a plate to the coloumn.
